PETER Cavanagh is praying that Saturday’s penalty miss at Bury was not his last act as an Accrington Stanley player.

Along with Robbie Williams and former Stanley players David Mannix, Jay Harris and Andy Mangan, Cavanagh must today formally respond after being charged by the FA with betting against the Reds in the final match of the 2007/08 season against Bury.

Cavanagh has already indicated he will plead not guilty, with an FA hearing expected in the summer, but Stanley have warned both he and Williams will be sacked if they are found guilty.

Cavanagh could have put the Reds ahead from the penalty spot in the last game of the 2008/09 campaign at Bury on Saturday, but his effort hit the bar and Stanley eventually lost 1-0.

The club captain said: “Obviously with all that’s gone on I really wanted to make amends by maybe scoring the winner, against obviously such an apt team. But it wasn’t to be.

“That could be my last involvement at Accrington, but we’ll have to see what the future brings and hopefully everything will be cleared up.

“If not, then obviously it’s a disappointing way to go out.”
