Blackburn Rovers are proving big news in India with magazine launch

Blackburn Rovers owners Venky’s have told the Indian nation they are in football “for the long haul” after having their message delivered monthly to 22,000 households across the country.

The poultry giants have teamed up with India’s only nationwide football magazine 90 Minutes to produce a monthly eight-page booklet called ‘Blue & White’, which is exclusively about Blackburn Rovers and the efforts of Venky’s to develop the game in their own country.

‘Blue & White’ is packed within every single copy of 90 Minutes that is distributed as Venky’s step up their attempts to connect with their Indian audience.

In January’s inaugural edition, Venky’s director and Rovers co-owner Balaji Rao wrote a welcome note to the magazine’s readers where he stated their commitment to helping India become “one of the top football countries in the world”.

Since then they have run interviews with Morten Gamst Pedersen, Yakubu and Paul Robinson as they look to spread the Rovers name.

Editor of 90 Minutes, Atishay Agarwal, said: “The Blue & White booklet was conceptualised by the club and the magazine together, as Rovers wanted to connect more closely with the Indian audience.

“We met the club officials in Pune when the team toured India, and held extensive talks as to how the thousands of Premier League fans in India could get to know Blackburn Rovers Football Club, its players, and its owners a bit better “The simple reason we started this booklet for Blackburn and not others was because they showed intent to connect to the Indian readership through the magazine. Obviously, the fact that the Rao family hails from India sped things along and made everything simpler.

“Part of the arrangement does involve finances which helps us take out the booklet and distribute it along with the magazine every month. The group isn't involved with 90 Minutes directly, though.“ Venky’s have yet to convince the majority of Blackburn Rovers fans that they can look forward to a bright future under their stewardship.

Their absence from Rovers’ Premier League games has angered supporters domestically, as has their continued refusal to communicate with the community.

Their shambolic regime to date has left huge uncertainty about the direction the club is heading, as well as the club battling against relegation, as they remain distanced from their fan base.

The publication of Blue&White will leave Rovers fans at home feeling increasingly as though they are being ignored but Agarwal believes it could spark a rise in the club’s popularity in India - as long as results improve.

He said: “I think both the club and us understand that it isn't possible to convert, say, United fans or Arsenal fans to Blackburn fans, especially in the current scenario, which sees the club battling to stay in the Premier League.

“Eventually, it's only going to be good performances on the pitch that wins the clubs hardcore fans in the country, but the idea is to try and make Rovers a fan's 'second club'.

“They may not watch their matches every week, but the aim is to make them look out for their match result on the weekend..

“The feedback we've received so far has been extremely positive, more so because it informs the readers more than what a regular show on TV would, about Rovers.

“The group's acquisition of the club, if not anything else, has made people form opinions about the team, the players, and the performances on the pitch.

“We would probably seen even greater interest had the club done better on the pitch, and if they survive in the league and improve over the next one to two years, we could surely see some Blackburn Rovers fans out here.

“There aren't really many Rovers 'fans' in India, but yes they do have followers. A lot of Indians follow the club on Twitter, and keep a check on their results and news, so barring the top clubs, Rovers would probably be the team that enjoys the highest following in India, simply because they're owned by an Indian company.”

Venky’s were unavailable for comment yesterday when the Lancashire Telegraph attempted to contact them about the magazine.

IN January’s inaugural edition of Blue & White, Rovers co-owner Balaji Rao told its readers the clear intentions that Venky’s have for the Ewood Park club...

"Acquisition of BRFC is a major milestone in VH Group’s history.

We are aware that presently BRFC is going through a tough time and it will take some time and effort for the club to regain its pre-eminent position in the Premier League.

We are committed to see that BRFC turns a corner and becomes a top performer in the near future.

India is one of the top cricketing countries in the world, so there is no reason why we can’t become one of the top football countries in the world as well.

It will happen if only we make an earnest effort.

One of the first and important steps needed for this is to identify young Indian players who hold a promise to excel in the game, and provide them with world-class training.

Towards this end, we are planning to start a state-of-the-art Blackburn Rovers Training Academy in Pune.

We want to create a world-class infrastructure for spotting and training talented youngsters from across India at this Academy.

Working towards grassroots development, we have launched Roverstar, a unique football program to be executed in 20 cities pan-India, where talent will be nurtured and developed.

Roverstar gives the youth a once in a lifetime opportunity to play alongside some of the world’s best football players.

The first edition of Roverstar took Indian cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Goa and Pune by storm during Blackburn Rovers’ visit to India in October 2011.

During the finals in Pune, young kids were selected for a visit to Blackburn Rovers Academy in Brockhall, UK.

This will be the time where these young children will get to enjoy the game, and the right coaching will help improve the standard of football in the next generation.

We believe that the acquisition of BRFC by the VH Group will mark the beginning of a new, exciting chapter in the history of football in India.

We are overwhelmed by the spontaneous welcome and support from the members of the club, players, and fans alike, and we are thankful for it.

We are in this game for the long haul, and, and we will work passionately for the betterment of the club. We are committed to the game of football, to the players, and the fans. We shall leave no stone unturned to make them feel delighted."

Venkys have apparently taken more money out of Blackburn Rovers then they have actually put in.

So what good are they exactly? What have they actually done to help the club?

They have seemingly got more out of the club then they have put in. More money and advertising.

It is a joke!

"We are aware that presently BRFC is going through a tough time and it will take some time and effort for the club to regain its pre-eminent position in the Premier League"

It won't take that long you muppet, why don't you try this; get a proper manager and give him some cash to spend, cash that was promised when you bought the club.

"We believe that the acquisition of BRFC by the VH Group will mark the beginning of a new, exciting chapter in the history of football in India".

And having witnessed the disgraceful way you have managed the club and sold all our best playing assets since you bought it, we the supporters of Blackburn Rovers
believe that the acquisition of BRFC by the VH Group will mark the beginning of the end for our proud club.

"We are overwhelmed by the spontaneous welcome and support from the members of the club, players, and fans alike, and we are thankful for it". - Wtf ???

"We are in this game for the long haul, and, and we will work passionately for the betterment of the club. We are committed to the game of football, to the players, and the fans. We shall leave no stone unturned to make them feel delighted".

Tell me Mr Rao, did you take lying lessons from a certain employee of yours or was it the other way round?

Finally, an emotional plea from the heart - Please sell, go now and take SK with you to run one of your other subsiduaries.

I'm all for the Rovers expanding our fan base globally, but the only way this will ever happen is with success. This article insinuates that the first Indian player who can actually make a pass will be thrown in the team. Thus creating a massive interest for the Indian public. A massive amount of merchandise branding said players name, breeds a hell of a lot of rupees for our obstinate overlords. I just can't look at anything they do with anything other than an extremely cynical eye Woody.

I just think they seen the potential marketability of football for brand "Venky" and jumped at it.. They don't really care about the club. If they find an Indian superstar footballer imagine what that could do for the Venky`s brand. They're business people with business minds. No way do they have the passion of owners like Jack Walker. Say what you must about Chelsea but Abromovich will do what ever necessary to win and succeed and I dont mean its all about spending money but his got a passion to win. Quite simply, Venkys have no interest in Blackburn Rovers as a club at the heart of our town, the history of its league football in England or of the management of the club and sustaining its future status. Its like they have bought a Turner oil painting and have it stored in Blackburn Library and are now promoting English art in India. Every bit of news coming out of the Raos and Kean's mouth is another turn of the screw for the fans.

Clearly the Venkys are in it just for themselves and what makes matters even worse is that they are clearly unaware that they are making fools out of themselves. Even worse they are damaging the good reputation of Blackburn Rovers Football Club. The Venkys make me very angry. How could John Williams have sanctioned the selling of the club to these people. I attended a meeting at Lords last Monday and what was clear is that there is no question that cricket is enormous in India. However, the Venkys have forgotten (probably never even knew) that cricket has been played in India since the days of the Raj and the heyday of the British Empire. The Venkys are not in the same class as the major players in IPL cricket. The cricketers are worshipped and have the potential to earn more than a Premier League footballer. Sachin Tendulkar earns around 30 million pounds a year (mostly through endorsements). Indian Cricket is out of the Venkys class or league so here they are causing a lot of damage in Premier League football instead; a shame really. The Venkys are not prepared to spend money; that is their problem and the sooner they sell the club to an owner with the correct intentions the better. The Venkys are simply a disgrace. Who knows, the Venkys may think that they can do for Indian football what Bernie Ecclestone has done for Formula 1. Completely blind to reality.

One simple phrade comes to mind for me, they talk the talk but dont walk the walk. If they are here for the long haul just you wait ten years (permitting we are still in the football league) they will be forcing the management in charge to play a certain number of indian players. They care not for rovers but rather would like to see India excelling as a footballing nation

Agree with everything there (and have always seen this since day 1).
However, can't agree with the JW scenario.
I may be wrong, but I do not believe JW had any (real) financial investment in BRFC to the point where he would have a say on who HE would like the club to go to.
The Trust simply wanted rid and he was tasked to officiate over the transaction which involved the fit and proper check. Not by him but the body in football that does this.
He will have probably have been working to a deadline where they have stated must be sold by e.g. season 2010/2011.
If he had any inkling or qualms over Venkys, I very much doubt his caution would come into it, or be heeded.
His deafening (enforced?) silence and departure demonstrates what he thought of them (+ T F).

"The Venky's Board has given assurances to BRFCI that Venky's:

(a) will commit funds on a consistent and systematic basis to future transfer and/or loan activity;

(b) intends to continue to support the existing management team and staff, and that it is committed to
the future development of, and investment in, the Club’s academy and youth infrastructure;

(c) will continue to support, promote and extend the Club’s local community and CSR activities (VH and its subsidiaries have their own trust engaged in significant charitable work);

(d) will seek to extend the Blackburn Rovers name and brand into India, the rest of south-east Asia
and beyond;

(e) will seek to develop and improve commercial performance across sponsorship, the Club's kit deal
and general merchandising activity;

(f) will seek to enhance the fan experience at Ewood Park itself on match days (and non match
days) and to maximise season ticket sales and any remaining match day ticket sales; and

(g) intends to improve the Club’s media platforms (for example the Club's TV channel) and to become more active in the social media space)".

Their words, not mine.

(c) will continue to support, promote and extend the Club’s local community and CSR activities (VH and its subsidiaries have their own trust engaged in significant charitable work);

(d) will seek to extend the Blackburn Rovers name and brand into India, the rest of south-east Asia
and beyond;

(e) will seek to develop and improve commercial performance across sponsorship, the Club's kit deal
and general merchandising activity;

I'll leave you to decide if they have kept to their word.
(a) low to non-existant
(b) pretty much destroyed
(c) not really sure
(d) looks like this may be the start of it, had exhibition in Pune
(e) charity not a sponsor
(f) now treated like criminals, gates shut at end of matches, searching, no banners
(g) No improvement at all

One question though, who holds them to these promises and what are the penalties for not keeping them?

Stupid question really!

So, let's see now.....

a) Their alleged belief no club could get relegated aside, they believed "investing" £3 to £5 million a year would be sufficient. This is about the amount which has been spent on agents' fees alone. Which set of accounts did they use to come up with these figures? Transfer and loan activity has resulted in a massive profit to date; even the income from the sales has not been used, never mind anything from them.

b) I tink Messrs. Williams, Finn ,Goodman and Allardyce would disagree. They changed the entire management structure virtually as soon as they walked through the door which has brought about the current shambolic mess masquerading as a football club.

c) This will be the "tens of hundreds" of community projects mentioned by Mr Hunt I suppose. Communicating with their customers is obviously not one of them.

d) That would be th epamphlet they are sending out with a footaball magazine with a circulation of 22,000 in a country with a population of over one and quarter billion (see above posts). Issues of 90 Minutes which are sold will be to people, probably a lot of ex-pats, who already have an allegiance with another club. i sthis the best they can do?

e) We play in the biggest, most widely broadcast league in the World but can't get a shirt sponsor; how hard can it be to get a shirt sponsor? I remember the club saying they had potential sponsors which they thought were unsuitable for the image of BRFC (Mr Hunt again, I think it was). That image is now so tarnished, perhaps Biffa would be seen as appropriate.

f) Now here's a real classic. I don't see how unqualified stewards frisking women and children - and they did, no matter what Mr Askew may have said - has improved the match day experience. We're already witnessing what is happening with match day ticket sales. I fancy this will be matched by season ticket sales come the time for renewal.

g) I refer back to the pamphlet, unless you include Hans Christian's plea for sympathy and understanding on SSN as being an example of "becoming more active in the social media space".

Disgraceful - if this rubbish was put forward as part of their business plan when trying to buy the club from the Walker's Trust, they may have seemed a decent bunch to sell the club to. In fact, they quite clearly haven't kept to most and gone about the others in a half a$$ed fashion.

It begs the question, what does the "fit and proper" committee at the FA actually look at? Talk is, as they say, cheap. Does the FA/EPL monitor owners who's mouths write cheques they later show they are not prepared to cash? Or do they just shrug their shoulders and admit they have done up like a kipper - again?

All season Mr.hunt has put a blanket on making any comments regarding anything of any real substance, yet as ST renewals fast approaches he now feels its time to connect and build bridges with the fans. What does this fool not understand, a manager nobody wants, transfers budget lied about, no children or women searched.. please we all saw that, owners that are clueless, management structure desimated, senior players given away, constant antagonistic comments made by the manager regards to support for him and team performances, yet not since Mr.hunts appointment has he felt the need to explain any situation at the club, he blatantly lied about the debt at the club. So why now Mr hunt and co. has it finally dawned that you will in my opinion, be lucky sell 5000 season tickets next year, all the spin you put out between now and then won't heal the rifts you and the rest of your management team and the owners have caused with the fans they won't be fooled again. You are an utter disgrace.

Resorting to abuse, really?

I said I'm a Rovers follower, not a fan. I follow their results, their news etc, but I'm not a fan.

And what a lovely first point!! "This is football". Used as a justification for juvenile generalization of Indians! Venky's might be doing a lot of things wrong, but it doesn't make what you're saying right.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, as you rightly pointed out. Hence I am as well. I'm not here to play the 'race card'. There is no race card. I never even said the comments were racist, but that gradually the expression of anger was leading to it. All said, there needs to be no spite directed at Indians in general because your owners haven't done a good job. Vent your fury at the Venky's, not at India. If you can't understand that simple statement, you don't deserve to even be a football fan. Grow up.

Really, what is wrong with you people?! When have I defended the Venky's?? They've done many things wrong, I know it!! It's obvious to all. There were some comments above that generalized too many things about India in general, and I think there's no need for that. I think that's fair enough? I'm not losing sleep over this anyway. Gosh, the benefits of celebrating diversity and having foreign owners is so uplifting. Venkys stewardship is going to reap massive rewards, I can just feel it. They are an absolute credit to a blameless, egalitarian, morally upright nation. Caste system, child labour, unchecked population growth, nobody cares about that anymore. India has modern high rise and everything. You tell us the answer and we tell you if we can play racist card. We're so lucky to have this association and so it has proved. Right now we are half way through March and we are still in with a chance of survival.

Who needs season ticket sales? Nobody in India cares if Ewood Park is empty. After all they can feast on Venkys' sanitised version in their super new glossy magazine. Just the thing to be reading when you are nibbling chicken leg in your back-to-front wrong-way-round replica authentic championship kit.

I don't want to continue this nonsense. I genuinely wish the best for BRFC, and I follow the club, which is why I came on here in the first place. I understand the hate for Venky's, but I don't understand the hate for Indians. That's all. Good luck to all of you.
pitty you didnt just have a chat with some of us on football at BRFC instead of looking down on us like venkys have done, i have traveled over the far east,middle east,africa many times volunteering work in many of those places and i dont hate indians africans or or any other race for that matter why should i was born in kenya The uk may have taken alot out of the commonwealth countries over the years but it has given a hell of alot more back across the years
Never looked down on you one bit. Who am I to look down on anyone? I was always looking for a civilized discussion, but the needless abuse was shocking and put me off. I only reacted to abuse, nothing else.
