Benjani trains with Blackburn Rovers

ROVERS CHANCE: Striker Benjani is in training with Blackburn as the club looks to sign a striker ROVERS CHANCE: Striker Benjani is in training with Blackburn as the club looks to sign a striker

FORMER Manchester City striker Benjani is training with Blackburn Rovers as Sam Allardyce’s search for more fire power continues.

The Zimbabwean arrived at Brockhall yesterday and will spend the next few days bidding to earn a Rovers deal, with the club’s medical staff assessing him.

The 31-year-old striker, a January target for Rovers, is now a free agent after being released by City boss Roberto Mancini and has yet to secure a future elsewhere.

However, any potential deal between him and Rovers is not yet believed to be close with both parties taking the next few days as an opportunity to assess the situation.

Rovers’ striker search will still continue elsewhere with a strong target man believed to be top of Allardyce’s wanted list, having already secured the services of the speedy Mame Biram Diouf.

Rovers though fear their improved bid for one unnamed striker will not be a success and have turned their attentions elsewhere.

Dear Andy Cryer
During the live web chat against Hearts. You stated to one fan who asked the question on the mystery striker ... That even if we dont sign him YOU would say who it was can you now name the MYSTERY MAN ???who we have failed to sign
And is it true what radio 5 live say about being offered craig bells from city is what got sam excited over the weekend ???

I hope Benjani isn't going to be signed unless we aren't successful with our bids for the un-named forward/s. Four forwards is enough for me because the more players that we sign then the higher we need to finish to break-even. And one bad season and we are back to being a selling club again. Its bad enough never using money to buy a player, I don't think I could bare it if every season we had to sell a player just to break-even.

Benjani could be a good signing but we GOT to make sure he's fit enough for the season and should be pay as you play deal!!! We like to know who this striker is we looking at! Jelavic maybe? it's probably James Beattie to be honest. that wouldn't bother me if it is.

If we could get Craig Bellamy! I'd be over the moon. Not the nicest lad in the world but he's got everything we need, skill, pace and most of all he's a proven goal scorer in the Prem. He's our 12-15 goals per season man if he stays fit!

Bellamy is dream world we cant go near his wages. I think also that alot clubs will go for Craig that be able to offer better deals than us, more likely he would follow Hughes to fulham.

I remember Benjani being mustard for a period for Portsmouth, he want no chump when City signed him thats for certain. Ive got mixed feelings about him now however as he couldnt cut it at sunderland so why would he cut it here? I thought Sunderland was the right move for him at the time but maybe he's passed it now?

Mmm so its looking like it could be Benjani and Diouf, with one more if Roberts leaves!?

.

Agree with Dunc - Mr Cryer, who was the main target we look to have missed out on?

I do agree that there probably is better deals out there, Bellamy did say in the press yesterday though its not about money anymore just about playing. At Fulham under Hughes he'd get a game every week so i presume he'll be going there. Stranger things have happened though in Football though so i wouldnt rule it out completely.

Benjani or Beattie they are both the same unfit has beens,if we are so short of cash why keep giving retirement packages to over the hill players,I'd rather gamble on youth in the hope of turning up a gem.Another point is the selection of Frank Fielding to the england squad,if he's that good he should be at least 3rd choice at Rovers.in my opinion 2nd choice, instead of throwing money away on two other keepers. The tight budget we run could be tighter in my opinion,Miller highlighted this when he picked his team for Saturday with Fielding on the bench thats a good call.

Kalinic will save the day! I have faith from the glimpses of quality we saw last season! We only play one striker anyway, so in games where Kalinic hasnt already got his hatrick and the game isnt quite over, we can bring on mame diouf or j-rob, or both, or put samba up top!

If it happens it be fantastic but heard before players claiming not about money but they then end up still getting high wage. And cant blame them looking out for their futures. I do feel he is looking for a move somewhere else and think teams like Spurs, Villa, Fulham, Sunderland etc would all want him and can offer him betetr packages. I just do not think we will end up with anybody like that and fact that we have gone full circle and got Benjami at the club who could have been training with us at the beginning of the preseason is a worry.

I think Benjani is something of a last resort. We could have had him in weeks ago!

Maybe this means we have missed out on our main targets?

I think he is just having a look at benjani so he can get rid of roberts and use the money for our main target/s

Greek Rover says...

I still think that Benjani could be a great signing for Rovers if Sam can get him fit and motivate him by playing him regularly. Sam is an astute manager who recognises talent when he sees it. I repeat what I said a few weeks ago in this column - Benjani was the Prem's top scorer only three years ago. You don't lose talent like that so Sam just needs to bring it out in him again.

Still, I dont think he would be a bad signing, just not a very inspiring good signing!

It would epitomise Rovers fall from grace.
