I hope things don’t go pear-shaped for Burnley like they did last season for Hull City, who are our opponents at Turf Moor on Saturday.

After our 3-1 home defeat to Wigan at the weekend, it’s a good fixture for us to have next.

Hull are a team we are looking to finish above, so it’s a game we need to be looking to get three points from.

It’s a chance to put things right straightaway.

Hull had a fantastic start last season.

I think out of their first nine games, they won six and drew two.

But being in the Premier League puts you under a lot of pressure and Phil Brown did do some strange things, obviously at the end of the season with his singing on the pitch once they’d stayed up.

I think Owen Coyle will be fine. He’s a Scotsman, like me, and I think he will keep his head up this season. It’s not as if we played that badly on Saturday. I just think the Burnley fans have not got to expect too much.

We’ve not been in the top flight for 33 years and if we can stay up it will be a great achievement.

I did feel sorry for Brian Jensen on Saturday because he was unfortunate with that first goal.

It looked like he hesitated, but then he went over on his ankle and the Wigan striker must have thought Christmas had come early.

But Brian’s big enough and wise enough to not let it affect him.

Roberto Martinez won at Burnley with Swansea last year, of course, and his Wigan team were a good strong side.

I thought we didn’t play that badly, though, and Chris Eagles had a chance to put us 2-1 up.

Chris was on and off really on Saturday. He’s hit and miss.

He’s a good player to have because he runs at players and he’s exciting.

He changed the game at Blackburn in the last match, and when he’s on his game he’s a really good player, just like Robbie Blake is. He just needs to be a bit more consistent.

In my playing days I played with a couple of people like that – Leighton James, who was a great winger for Burnley, and Charlie Cook at Chelsea.

It was just a shame that we lost our 100per cent home record.

The players will be feeling quite down this week, but Turf Moor has been a fortress this season and I think losing that record is no big thing.

Maybe they should make one or two changes for the Hull game.

I’d like to see Steven Fletcher and David Nugent both start up front because Nugent added that bit of sparkle when he came on – but Burnley can still have a good home record for the rest of the season.
