MATT Derbyshire insists he would still relish the chance to resurrect his Ewood Park career – but fears a desire for ‘regular football’ could spark his permanent exit.

The Blackburn Rovers striker confirmed Greek outfit Olympiakos were set to make their interest in him official, after his spectacular four-month loan spell, and admits he may have to leave East Lancashire for good for career development.

The Greek champions are understood to be preparing a bid in the region of £3million for the Blackburn born 23-year-old, with Derbyshire seriously considering the move abroad as he looks to fulfil his long-term dreams.

He said: “If I am going to play football here then I will be more than happy to stay here, why wouldn’t I be?

“But if I am going to be playing more football there then I will be going there.

“I am in this profession to play football, not sit on a subs bench or play for the reserves.

“I am at the age now where it is very important I do play football. I have to do that for my career.

“I have been at Blackburn for a long time and I love the club. The fans have been superb to me and still are. But I have to go where is best for my career.”

Rovers have so far not received a bid for the player but sources close to Derbyshire and Olympiakos believe an official bid is only a matter of time.

Rovers though are determined to get ‘good money’ for their home talent after he took the Super League by storm.

Derbyshire’s eight-goal tally helped Olympiakos to the league and cup double and, with the prospect of Champions League football next season, Derbyshire admits a Greek move would be an alluring prospect.

He said: “It was brilliant. I went there to play football, that was the main thing, but I also got the chance to learn a different language and a different culture.

“You don’t often get that chance in life but I did and I am really grateful to Olympiakos.

“As a striker I look to score goals, that is all I have ever looked to do, and if I can help the team win games then I am doing my job. It is as simple as that.

“Having said that though I have enjoyed coming back to Ewood and seeing the lads play. Lets be honest, this is still my team.

“I don’t know what my future holds and that is being entirely honest. I know Olympiakos are interested but that is about it at the moment.”

Before that, Derbyshire will hope to play a major part in England under 21s European Championship campaign in Sweden, starting next month.

He said: “I am Looking forward to the summer and the England under 21 games as well.

"Who knows what could happen from that?”
