SEAN Dyche is delighted with the selection problem his in-form strikers have handed him ahead of the trip to West Brom this weekend.

While Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood have been crucial in Burnley turning their winless around before the three-week break, Sam Vokes also got in on the act on international duty, scoring twice for Wales and setting up two more in their 6-0 demolition of China.

That hands Dyche what many would term a selection headache ahead of the trip to the Hawthorns, although the Clarets chief rejects that term and sees the tough decision he has to make purely as a positive.

While Burnley have tended to stick with the 4-4-1-1 system for most of this season, Wood has been making a serious case for inclusion alongside Barnes in what would likely be more of a 4-4-2.

The record signing has come off the bench against Everton and West Ham to turn those games around, scoring three times in 75 minutes of action since returning from a knee injury.

Barnes has struck twice in the same period, with that partnership showing signs of promise that could see dovetail from the start in the Midlands.

But asked about the selection dilemma, Dyche said: "That's what you want, and Vokesy going away, two goals and two assists.

“The idea of management, you don’t want a group that picks itself, you want a group that you have to think ‘shall we, shan’t we, should he play?’ That’s what you want.

“If have a team that picks itself, that’s usually a sign the others aren’t at a level to compete enough, so having decisions like we have is good news generally."

While Barnes and Wood's return of five goals in 75 minutes of being paired next to each other is a major case for starting matches, the absence of that game-changing option from the bench could be a counter argument.

Dyche revealed that Wood was close to being handed a start alongside Barnes at the London Stadium against the Hammers.

Instead the New Zealand international came on the final half an hour and turned the game in Burnley's favour.

But with Dyche now blessed with options across the pitch he has more than happy to consider a change in shape that would allow Barnes and Wood to start together for the first time this season.

"We could have started with them at West Ham and I chose not to," Dyche said.

"It’s not just what you think it is because they scored some goals, it’s how you think it might affect the team and the tactical plan.

"We’ve flexed it a lot more this season. A few years ago people said I only play 4-4-2. Some now probably think we’ve only changed it because of that.

"If you’ve got players who are flexible, you use them for that. We’ve got such a competitive element and different styles that we can flex it and change the way we play.

"We could now go with out and out wide men, play three in midfield, we’ve done the 4-4-1-1, we’ve done 4-4-2, once we did 4-3-3.

"It was always there in my thinking but you’ve got to have the players to do it."
