FLEXIBILITY

It’s a word Sean Dyche has used on what feels like numerous occasions this pre-season and it’s clearly been a key message for the Clarets during the summer.

Last season was the first we’ve seen some obvious changes in shape from Dyche, using a three-man midfield early in the season before reverting back to the tried and tested 4-4-2 from December onwards.

But he’s tried the 4-4-1-1 and 4-3-3 this pre-season and the Burnley boss has been keen to stress that he wants ‘flexibility’ this season.

Dyche has hinted that the formation will change more often this season, whether that be from game to game or even during games. His options in central midfield are plentiful, and that may see Dyche use three in there more often, perhaps starting with the trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend.

STEVEN DEFOUR

On the subject of midfield it’s been a positive summer for Steven Defour. When the Clarets departed for their summer breaks in May it looked likely that Defour’s one-season stay at Turf Moor was going to come to an end. He hadn’t featured much in the second half of the season and both parties appeared ready for a split.

But interest in the Belgium international has been minimal and Defour has returned to Burnley determined to work hard and press his claims for a place in the side, something he has done with gusto.

Fitness was a major problem for Defour, never completing 90 minutes in the Premier League, but he has looked sharp this pre-season and his class has shone through at times.

A reinvigorated and refreshed Defour could be like a new signing for Burnley, and it would be no surprise to see him start at Chelsea. Now it looks likely he will remain at Turf Moor for a second season.

IRISH INFLUENCE

Jon Walters became Burnley’s fifth Ireland international when he signed from Stoke City this summer, and it’s been a good pre-season for them, who appear to be pushing each other on to new heights at Turf Moor.

Walters has been in the goals and Kevin Long has impressed, signing a new three-year deal, while Stephen Ward will be aiming to beat off the challenge from Charlie Taylor at left-back.

Jeff Hendrick has also shone on occasions, particularly against Celta Vigo, but this has been a hugely important pre-season for record signing Robbie Brady.

Joining a new club halfway through a season is always difficult but this summer has allowed Brady to get a better understanding of what is expected of him in this Clarets system.

The signs have been promising so far, with a couple of very well-taken goals and some assists as well, and hopefully we will see Brady at his very best from the start of the season next weekend.
