Hopes were high among Burnley fans of sealing another big money deal to follow the captures of Jeff Hendrick earlier in the day from Derby County for a club record £10.5m and Steven Defour, earlier in the month, for £7.5m from Anderlecht.
But with no news as the 11pm deadline passed, it eventually emerged that the deal was off.
