ASTON Villa boss Paul Lambert was delighted with his side’s performance at Burnley – but admitted they could still have lost.
Villa led 1-0 at Turf Moor thanks to Joe Cole’s goal but they had to hang on for a point in the final minutes after Danny Ings equalised from the penalty spot.
The draw resulted in Villa fans aiming sustained criticism at Lambert in the closing stages.
“It’s the best we’ve played in a few weeks, I thought we should have been two or three up at half time,” said Lambert, who went into the game without suspended striker Christian Benteke.
“Some of the football I thought we played was outstanding.
“But when Burnley scored the penalty they put us on the back foot for the last few minutes and we could have lost it, which would have been an absolute travesty.
“But most of that game I was happy with the way we played. I think with flowing football we were excellent. Joe Cole was fantastic.
“If Benteke had played today I think he would have got a couple.”
