Positive attitude crucial says Rovers boss Gary Bowyer

YOU would have been hard pressed to find a Blackburn Rovers supporter with a smile on their face walking out of Ewood Park on Friday.

And with good reason too, seeing as their side had wasted another golden opportunity, and seemingly a final one, to close the gap on the play-off places.

But back inside the ground Rovers boss Gary Bowyer was clinging to the positives.

The 0-0 draw with basement boys Yeovil Town extended his team’s unbeaten run to nine games while the clean sheet was their 15th of the season.

But perhaps the only positive of what had undeniably been an immensely frustrating afternoon was the failure of Brighton & Hove Albion, Reading and Bournemouth also to win.

Further encouragement came on Saturday when Ipswich Town were beaten at Watford.

Rovers had thrown yet more points away but aside from Nottingham Forest, who returned to winning ways against Birmingham City on Saturday, so too had all of their rivals for sixth spot.

That means, ahead of today’s trip to relegation-threatened Birmingham, Rovers remain with a small chance of making the play-offs.

“There are still three games to go, we’re still in it and in the end it might be a big point,” said Bowyer.

Related links

“We’ve got to keep fighting, keep smiling and keep going. At this stage of the season you want the games coming thick and fast and fortunately we’re going to have 24 hours more than Birmingham to recover.

“We’ve got to go there still in a positive frame of mind. That’s the message – keep positive. We’ll keep smiling and working hard.

“We’ve got three games to go and there are going to be more twists.”

Had Rovers managed to find a way to break down Yeovil they would have been two points behind Brighton in sixth instead of their current delicate position, four points off the pace in 11th.

But Paul Robinson, like his manager, is remaining upbeat.

The Rovers goalkeeper said: “We wanted to get six points from these two games this weekend and, although we won’t, results have gone our way and we are still in with a chance.

“We have got to go to Birmingham in a positive frame of mind and win the game there.

“There have been lots and ups downs and there are bound to be a few more. And there have been ups and downs not just this season but the last three or four seasons.

“We are trying to put some pride back into this club.”

Rovers could not have asked for better opponents to return to winning ways this afternoon.

Birmingham have not won any of their last 15 league games at home, a run of eight defeats and seven draws stretching back to October 1 when they beat Millwall.

Rovers, however, have a wretched recent record at St Andrew’s, losing six and drawing one of their last seven outings at the home of the Blues, and Bowyer will again warn his players not to take anything for granted.

“We’ve spoken to the players about expecting easy games,” said Bowyer.

“They may look easy on paper but in the Championship there is no such thing.”

Trying to be positive about today but after Friday's dismal effort and GB's reaction to the fans I am finding that extremely difficult.

Added to that I have a cold and am stuck in bloody Manchester all day, Coronation Street Tour no less.

Mood not good, may just hit Grumpy Old Man proportions around 4:45 pm.

This has home win written all over it.

Ah well, when are next season's Season Tickets going on sale?

So what, wins are what are needed. If we had drawn every game and gone through the season 'unbeaten' we would have been four points above the relegation places now. Draws are no good and we've had too many. If we had only got half the points we have needlessly dropped we would easily have been in the play offs now.

I agree with you, I thought the players were not trying hard enough on Good Friday and gone back to the South expecting a win with at least 2 goals.

As for next season's Season Tickets, I was advised that they will go on sale sometime next month as those involved are still working on it. Brighton & Hove Albion have begun selling theirs a few months ago!

We are actually away to Birmingham today Dave. For once I don't think we will win today but I do hope to be pleasantly surprised. You?

Difference between me and you Dave is I have a full life, I get out and about, and although I like Corrie and rarely miss an episode my wife is a real fan and this is a birthday treat for her, these tickets were not easy to get

I do get a bit despondent when things don't go to plan Dave, but unlike you I don't wear sackcloth and ashes all the time.

I may be a tad down in the dumps right now, in fact I feel rough as a Badgers arse (you should know what one of those is like) but in a day or two I will be back to normal while you will still be a miserable ****.

I can live with that.

We are not ready for the top fight, the body language of GB and players are showcaseing that. This level is enough in there mind, I mean the winning attitude is missing, look at the last 9 matchs, is proved. draw...draw...draw..
...safe my job for the day!!!!

If we loose today, Please change this attitude or get a BIG Impact Manger for next season.

Given what the club has been through, I predicted top ten at best after seeing the start team GB made. Rovers have done very little to prove me wrong this season. What irks most fans has been the total lack of drive from midfield, GB's often poor tactics and inability to react during the game. Their inconsistency certainly does not inspire much confidence going forward and if we are to persevere with the plodder, then scraping into the play-offs next year will be the target.
A player can have the odd off game, when it's the whole team the finger points to the manager!

"Positive attitude crucial" is the headline. Well Mr Bowyer do you think it is positive playing the bottom of the league at home with Lowe and Williamson in the same 11? Far too many times your first 11 and the timing of your substitutions has left many fans bemused and bewildered. Away at Birmingham today I cannot see any other result than a standard 2-0 defeat in which after the game you will say " We have more points than last year".

Harsh? How can Lowe and Williamson be positive? How can one man up front for most of his tenure be positive? How can changing his team selection willy nilly be positive? Does GB inspire confidence or desire?

unfortunately i wont be travelling to the midlands as i'm skint but i wish you all the luck in the world but i hope you won't need it.

being unbeaten is all well and good but we need wins and the next three games are your last chance to get the max two wins in a row monkey off your back, i think most of us on here have known for quite some time that promotion is out of the question this season, but lets go out with a bang...do it not only for yourselves and for what will be the last time in a Rovers shirt but do it for the fans who will never stop supporting you's.

i'm glad you didnt promise an instant response to the mediocre result on Friday...but i hope the conviction is still there, on closing Gary....don't have a pop at the fans mate, at the end of the day we're the only ones that will be at the club in future years...Guaranteed.

You are starting to sound comical GB and sounding like a man who Knows he has failed to deliver a promotion push even though he has brought loads of players in. Venky's have given you all the players you requested including the French guy you have never used, Feeney and Varney who are hardly used. All increasing our financial dept situation, yet you struggle to even get near the play off's. Defeat today may see you start to see you come under pressure by Venky's. The fact they did not come on Friday can't be a good sign.

Positive attitude means positive tactics which In turn means positive results. Nothing to lose now GB, go for the out and out attack with the right attacking players and even If we lose, the supporters have at least been entertained to a certain extent. Can't for the life In me understand this negative approach at this time of the season, especially when we can't be relegated. And change centre midfield for crying out loud.
