FULL-TIME: Burnley 0, Leicester 2

BURNLEY suffered their first home defeat of the Championship season - and in over a year - at the hands of leaders Leicester City.

The Clarets, previously unbeaten in 23 at Turf Moor, went into the game knowing that a win by two clear goals would mean taking top spot from the Foxes.

But they were faced with an uphill battle when Sam Vokes went off injured with just a few minutes on the clock.

The striker pulled up in the fifth minute with a knee problem and spent a few minutes on the sidelines having treatment before he was ultimately replaced by David Edgar in the eighth.

Already without top scorer Danny Ings and leading assist maker Kieran Trippier through injury, and influential midfielder Dean Marney through suspension, Vokes' exit served as a huge blow to the home side.

But they held their own in the game until a moment of class from David Nugent in the 35th minute.

The former Clarets striker took the ball from substitute Chris Wood, fresh on as a replacement for the injured Jamie Vardy, and fired past Tom Heaton for his ninth career goal against Burnley, and second this season after scoring from the spot in a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium.

A decent right footed effort from Michael Kightly brought a first save of the game from Kasper Schmeichel.

But Wood's superb strike in the 78th minute consigned the Clarets to only their fourth league defeat of the campaign and first in 17 games.

There appeared to be a foul on Michael Duff in the build-up, but that was one of a number of things that went un-noticed by referee Chris Foy, who failed to spot two consecutive handball offences in the Leicester box in the first half.

Brilliant performance by Leicester as predicted, Burnley were simply never in it, the simple fact is you have three good players who have kept you in the race all season, now they are out injured reality is kicking in.

Bereft of ideas, you have to hope now that you do have enough points in the bag because if anyone catches you you can forget qualifying through the play offs if this is all you have to offer.

The simple fact is, Burnley were awful! The day it required the other players to step up and maintain the run of form, they capitualised, lacking innovation and invention...but above all, the energy they have shown throughout the season. If they had played the way they did today throughout the season, they'd be fighting to stay in it and avoid relegation. That is how bad they were.

What is the point of achieving promotion to the Premier League, if the team that played today, are the team that is going to play in that league. It simply would not stand a chance against PL teams. Today's loss, for those of you thinking of using the excuse, was not about 'law of averages', that Burnley were due a loss at home. No! This really was capitualation.

Why only one player at the front? We are not talking Ings here, we are talking Barnes. You cannot win games of this calibre with one player at the front. Scoring a goal is not a specialised skill, as Burnley have demonstrated throughout the season.

Losing key players is a nuisance, and puts pressure on the other players in the team, but it is up to them to step up to the plate and still do the business, which is what they did not do today.

How long are the key players going to be out? How are Burnley going to cope with the last 8 games? Who is going to score? Barnes?

Owd Nick's comments speak the truth. Dyche has got to get the players motivated and believing in themselves, because if Burnley play like they did today for the rest of the games, they will get caught and out run. You can forget the Premier.

Very disappointed. Nevertherless, UTC's!

Thank you, I wasn't being sarcastic or triumphal but having played Leicester last week I knew what you were facing.

They are a very, very good side all over the park.

Burnley have been lucky with injuries all season now they have happened your three key players are missing and to be honest from what I saw today you really don't have anything else.

You can't blame Dyche, I am pretty sure he did his best with what he has at his disposal, but no team at this level can afford to lose players of the quality of Ings, Trippier and now Vokes for any length of time.

What's with the cabbage patch pitch?

I don't know what it looked like for anyone there but the bounce was awful and any attempted passes on the ground were wobbling all over the place.

0 in 4 years sounds sh1t as well. The biggest player we missed today was dean marney and I knew we would. Hopefully Blackpool can hang on n soften the blow of today's result.

As for the bube bursting I very much doubt it. I don't fancy us for much at Watford next week either but we should av trips, marney n Ings back the week after.

We still average over 2 points a game, have a huge goal difference and are 10 points clear of 3rd.

You're paying a lot of attention to Burnley so say you don't support them, out classed?? I don't think so.

Who do you support?

By the way........1 in 35 still sounds sh1t
0 in 4 years sounds sh1t as well. The biggest player we missed today was dean marney and I knew we would. Hopefully Blackpool can hang on n soften the blow of today's result.

As for the bube bursting I very much doubt it. I don't fancy us for much at Watford next week either but we should av trips, marney n Ings back the week after.

We still average over 2 points a game, have a huge goal difference and are 10 points clear of 3rd.
I only want the bubble to burst so the best derby in football continues,

Wheras you are going to get shafted by the FFP and be forced to sell your highest earning players, all the while with Mr Mogodon Bowyer to motivate a load of freebies in a vain attempt to avoid relegation.

Fortunately, the results have have helped us a little, what with QPR only drawing, and although Derby won, our nearest rivals for 2nd place automatic promotion remain 9 and 10 behind us respectively.

With 7 games to play. Burnley could finish with 100 points, whilst QPR and Derby can play for 91 and 90 points. The only way we could be caught and overtaken is if we drop 4 games, and QPR or Derby do not lose or draw a single match.

Looking at Burnley's remaining fixtures after today's game and especially after the performance, they look quite demanding and loseable. No, I am not being negative, just looking at things realistically. Marney will be back, and hopefully by the time the trip to Warford arrives we'll have another wounded soldier returning?

I still believe we'll achieve the 2nd place automatic spot, but not without having the nerves shredded.

You are spouting a load of s**t about the team. Listen to the pundits in football who have said Burnley are not a 1 man team a really silly comment from someone who on occasions makes some constructive valued points.

Any team home or away would have a tuff game against a very good Leicester team.

Yes there was no Ings , Trippier, Marney a big loss to the team but we have managed. Losing Vokes really did unsettle and unbalanced the team and we didn't create enough to really trouble Leicester who rightly deserved the win.

Remember we have taken 22 points from the top eight teams. First defeat in17 games and only a fourth defeat of the season. Still sitting 2nd in he table and 9 points clear of QPR and 7 games left.

Now you don't have a season like that with just 3 good players so stop talking utter nonsense .

Burnley will focus on the next game and getting a result.

They looked poorer today than during the win they scabbed at Ewood.

It looks like in this bizarre season this ramshackle assembly of missfits will probably make it, mostly because QPR seem intent on blowing it. What fun it's going to be watching the routine destruction and embarrassment next season. Think I'll start watching MOTD again.

I agree it wasn't a good day at the office and losing Vokes unsettled and unbalanced the team today.

We all knew at the start of the season that the squad was not as strong or as big as the manager would have liked but up until recently we have been very lucky injury wise and something had to give at some point.

We up until today had only lost 3 In 38 games and 6 in 46 in all competitions including the end of last season.

To say if we had played like this or like that we would been in trouble is utterly stupid. We can all go on about ifs and buts. Reality is we have been consistent all season and are where we deserve to be. Today with the injuries was not our day and that was that. Let's face it at the start of the season Burnley were tipped to be struggling at he bottom end.

Look at the Form of QPR with the squad they have. Look at Forest and now Brighton . They have struggled when many have tipped them for better things. Leeds too . So compare there form to ours.

As for playing 2 up front after losing Vokes with the bench Dyche had who could he put up front with Barnes? He had to go with what he had.

As for this team playing in the Premiership well we know it wasn't our strongest team and really another pointless remark. We aren't in the Premiership but when we are Sean Dyche will know what he needs to do to build a squad that may have a chance to stay up. It's all down to finances at the end of the day.

It will be a tuff last 7 games to achieve that automatic spot but within our grasp. You like the rest of us need to take this below par performance on the chin ,stop being negative be positive taking into account how good they have been so far and keep backing them to the hilt .

Correction. They beat Burnley reserves and thanks to that idiot Foy. No wonder Mourhino goes on about him. He is useless. Missed two hand balls and a foul for their last goal. I would back our first team to beat you anytime.
First team? Reserve team ?.....you have only got one team as we have been telling you all season.
OK fair do's you have done well but you have been lucky with injuries, that was always going to catch you out.
It may be a case of stumbling over the line for you

Yes well stumble or not we probably need two more wins and you know as well as I do that we will get them.

Can't wait for Dyche to get some decent money to spend in the summer to build a competitive squad.

After next season we will be so far ahead of Blackburn that you will need a telescope to see us.

Pompey Claret:"To say if we had played like this or like that we would been in trouble is utterly stupid."

I don't have a 'stupid' bone in my body. The comment I made stands as a concern to the capitulation witnessed yesterday. Instead of capitulation, Dyche chose to use the word 'challenges'.

"As for playing 2 up front after losing Vokes with the bench Dyche had who could he put up front with Barnes? He had to go with what he had. "

I said before the match that I would be happy with a draw. Once Vokes limped off, and after they got their first goal, the draw was never on the cards with just Barnes up front on his own. We had to take the game to them in some way, which we never did. Both Kightly and Stanislas are good players but lack pace. Stanislas needed to come more 'in-field' rather than trying to keep probing down the left, as his lack of pace always had him marshalled out the game. The same thing was happening to Kightly on the right. We needed to play down the middle so that Burnley could keep a good shape. 4-1-4-1 was not a good shape against Leicester who had lot's of pace.

"As for this team playing in the Premiership well we know it wasn't our strongest team and really another pointless remark."

Nothing pointless about the remark at all. I just don't sugarcoat situations. If it's raining I don't claim it is sunny, it's the wrong information to give to those going outside. Stick with reality. Give praise when it is merited, and criticism constructively so that people nod their agreement and show they understand why it is given. A lesson you should learn.

Come off it. The 34 year thing has gone - move on sunshine. We have the bragging rights now. Face fact that if we go up we will av the same bragging rights for longer.

You will need to sell your better players - all 2 of them - in order to survive. Whereas if we go u we can build a stronger squad whilst still breaking even.

If I supported rovers I would be keeping quiet about who the better team is. It's down in black and white. 27 points is it? That's nearly as big as the gap between your ears!!

Whereas if we go u we can build a stronger squad whilst still breaking even. If I supported rovers I would be keeping quiet about who the better team is. No fans, no ground and no history that you will ever remember...i feel for you.
Your feelings are wasted sweetheart. We own our stadium, our training ground have one the title twice using our own resources, not the injection of cheating funds. And you did not win it at all for 81 years in a stretch. We won it twice in that period when there was level playing field. And we played more years in the top flight to 1971/72 too.

Your chasing Portsmouth down the plughole. When you're gone just cast your ear; you'll hear laughter all across Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, Preston. Blackpool to name just a few.

Good that we didn't risk Trips or anyone else for that matter as there are bigger bridges to cross than the Leicester game. No need to hit any red buttons, three unconvincing 1-0 wins would see us over the line from here and that is all it's about.

Well one , I wasn't saying you are stupid just one or two bits of your comments were not very constructive.

One really bad game his season from a Burnley side that had to deal with the best side in the Championship with not there strongest team and the set back of losing Vokes, unsettled and unbalanced the team. We had coped in a couple of games missing certain players but we fell short this time and yes I do agree quite a lot short but you have to look at the season so far.

Reality is we know that most of this team aren't strong enough for the Premiership. Don't you think Sean Dyche knows that? We are talking about a Championship game the 39th of the season and our 4th defeat. Your talking as if it's the end of the world. If this leads to a run of defeats then I will hold my hands up apologise and say your right. There are 7 tuff games left let's see how it goes especially when we start to get certain players back . I must say reading your reply saying the team should have done this, that and the other appears you know more than the manger or is it that you think he isn't up to the challenges, we are facing at the moment?

Oh and I have learnt many a lesson in my life and one is seeing the bigger picture a lesson you should learn.

The simple fact is, Burnley were awful!

The simple fact is, Burnley were awful!

He played 1 up front because Vokes got injured after 5 mins and there are no other strikers in the squad. Did you actually watch the match? Do you know the squad we have?

No other strikers in the squad! What's Barnes then, a ball boy? Do YOU actually know the squad? Why is it that irrelevant people come on here to give irrelevant comments. Prat!

Pompey: obviously, your a glass that's half full, and not half empty man. Fair enough. My comments may well indeed be hard for you to understand because I write pretty good English, and coherently marshall my logic.
Once again, to clarify, my post are predicated on the fact that the team that played Leicester, and whom not only lost their other star striker, but the game also, actually capitulated.
It may well be a one off, hence my warning, that if the team play the last 7 games like they did against Leicester, they may well get caught by either QPR or Derby?

We need to win another 4 games to really clinch the 2nd spot. There is talk of Ings on his way back, and with Marney back, too...I am hoping and expecting to finish strong, but we have some tricky games, 2 of which should be definite wins, but we need to finish around 93 points. Time will tell.

Elysiumfire "No other strikers In the squad ! What's Barnes then, a ball boy? Do YOU actually know the squad? Why is it that irrelevant people come on here to give irrelevant comments. Prat!

At the start of the game what two strikers were on the pitch? Vokes and Barnes were they not? When Vokes went off who was the lone striker up front? Was it not Barnes? So Ings out Vokes out who was on the bench to adopt the strikers position vacated by Vokes to keep the 4-4-2 formation?

So to answer that last question there were no recognised strikers on the bench. So don't talk about irrelevant comments when as you say you "write pretty good English (No need for a COMMA when you have used AND) and coherently marshall my logic . Well going by your comment that's some logic.

Anyway fella my glass is always full it's yours that is empty.

Look at the money Leicester's squad cost to put together . They have strength and depth in all positions . They had a striker go off but had another quality striker to replace like for like. That was the difference between the two sides in terms of squad size and money spend.

These last 7 games will be very tuff just like the last 39. We now know that Vokes is out for the rest of the season. Marney out for the Watford game and maybe too early for the other pair to make the game so if we get a draw there I will be happy.

I'm not going to say that we won't mimic the Leicester game again as I remember what happened to them last season. Going by the season we have had we still I feel have it in us to complete the job and like you say put in a strong finish. However there will be some nail biting times ahead.

Keep your chin up and maybe your glass will be half full.
