Full-time: Middlesbrough 0 Blackburn Rovers 0

PAUL Robinson produced a man-of-the-match performance as Rovers ground out a hard-earned draw at the Riverside to move within four points of the play-off places.

Robinson denied Mustapha Carayol on three occasions and also saved from Nathaniel Chalobah and Albert Adomah to ensure Gary Bowyer’s side made it 11 clean sheets for the Championship campaign – one more than they achieved in the whole of last season.

Rovers, who defended resolutely throughout, would have been happy to go in at half-time level after they came under sustained pressure in the first half.

Boro, defending a four-game unbeaten league run at home, were fast out of the traps and forced Robinson into action inside the first five minutes.

Firstly the former England number one made a flying stop to deny Carayol after the livewire winger barged past two challengers and made his way into the box.

From the resulting corner Robinson kept out a header from home debutant Chalobah.

With their raids down the left George Friend and – in particular – Carayol caused Rovers plenty of problems before the break.

And it was the latter who tested Robinson for the third time when he cut inside on to his right foot and let fly with a dipping 20-yard drive that the overworked goalkeeper pushed past his right-hand post.

The closest the visitors went in the opening period was when Rudy Gestede used his strength to win the ball on the byline before playing a clever reverse pass into the path of Jordan Rhodes, whose goal-bound effort was blocked behind by Ben Gibson.

Gestede, from the Tom Cairney corner that followed, then side-footed wide after he peeled away from his marker.

The momentum was with the hosts, however, and it came as no surprise when Rovers boss Bowyer replaced Kane with Adam Henley at the interval after his grilling by Carayol.

But the change did little to stem the tide and within the first 10 minutes of the second half full debutant Danny Graham saw a deflected header from an Emmanuel Ledesma corner – one of 16 Boro won – go just the post before Grant Hanley nearly turned an inviting cross from left-back Friend into his own goal.

Rovers breathed an even bigger sigh of relief in the 55th minute when the lightning-fast Carayol chased down a raking pass over the top, brushed off the challenge of Henley and went one-on-one with Robinson.

But once again the veteran stopper came out on top, keeping Carayol’s side-footed attempt out with his feet.

Robinson’s opposite number – and former Rovers keeper – Shay Given was then called into action for the first time as he turned aside a 20-yard shot from Cairney.

The save ensured Boro’s run without conceding a league goal at home stretched to 454 minutes.

But Jason Lowe – whose wonderful winner settled November’s reverse clash between the teams at Ewood Park – was not far away with an ambitious 30-yarder.

But it was Robinson who was worked for the final time when he tipped the ball over the bar from substitute Adomah.

Middlesbrough: Given, Varga, Woodgate, Gibson, Friend, Chalobah, Whitehead, Ledesma (Adomah 68), Leadbitter, Carayol (Kamara 75), Graham (Main 82). Subs not used: Konstantopoulos, Butterfield, Hines, Omeruo.

Booked: Chalobah, Carayol.

Rovers: Robinson, Kane (Henley 46), Hanley, Kilgallon, Spurr, Lowe, Taylor, Cairney, Dunn (Conway 56), Rhodes, Gestede (Varney 76). Subs not used: Eastwood, Williamson, Dabo, Evans.

Referee: Stuart Attwell.

Attendance: 14,965 (691 away).

Oh dear, the no-dads are slip sliding down the table once more, now as low as 9th and effectively 5 points off the play-off's given the lousy goal difference and having played more games than those closing in behind you means you could well be looking at 11th or 12th place very soon. Hanging on to scrape a draw against Middlesbrough in a must win game is simply disgraceful.

Meanwhile, the super Clarets go marching back into 2nd place with a stunning win against a tough Millwall side fighting for their lives. Automatic promotion is now in sight.

Questions

Why was Dunn on for so long? The game totally passed him by.

Is Rhodes beyond being substituted he was 100% totally ineffectual.

Time for Todd Kane to be sent back to Chelsea I am afraid. Totally out of his depth as a defender and continually our weakest link.

He doesn't want to be there and he has gone off the boil. I bet he can't wait to move on?

Meanwhile normal service is resumed at the business end of the table.

Robbos starting to show what we missed. We'd have got turned over today had Kean or Eastwood been 'keeper.

A nice blend of experience to add to our very young side will see a decent finish to the season me thinks.

Can I just point out that in order to beat us in the playoffs both teams have to be in them.

No matter how much it hurts Burnley are consistent enough to make the top two. And just when have Wowvers ever been in any of the playoff places or even looked likely to break into them?

It just ain't happening. Your one and only hope in Rhodes can't even be bothered putting a shift in these days and a massive one shot at goal today sums up the direction in which you are heading.

Looks like Rhodes has thrown the towel in at Blackburn having failed to get the move he was after in January. Another 2 points dropped in your futile scramble to escape mid-table obscurity.

I think we probably have to accept that hopes of the playoffs are fading now with four points dropped in the last two winnable away games. This is probably a blessing because this squad is nowhere near ready for the Premiership and returning too early would just give the Glitterballs a reason to moan and boo from the stands instead of their armchairs. Let's consolidate on the progress we've made, keep experimenting with the midfield combinations to find the best options for different situations and bring another striker through from somewhere. We can't rely on Jordan Rhodes. Sorry to say it chaps but he has gone right off the boil and I can't help wondering whether his heart is in the club. There is no shame in looking at another season in the Championship if it allows the squad to mature into a more confident and experienced unit next year.

No player deliberately goes out to not do his best. It is in his own interest to do all he can to show what he can do especially as his PL credentials need to be enhanced. He is a goal scorer no question. But! He has to improve his all round abilities. That is why no PL side has taken a punt on him. If he shows over the coming months there is more to his game than a few more goals then he may well move. But I suspect no PL side will go for him. They would be more interested in a couple of Burnley players.

I said during the transfer window that no bids would come in for the same reasons that you have just stated. He's not the finished article yet but for me the longer he stays here the better. It's not like he's missing any sitters so give him the chances and he'll put them away. If he does want to move what better incentive is there for him to 'up his game'

I can live with that Charlie boy. We're rebuilding from 3 seasons of carnage.

In dingle world that would've been rounded off to a 1,000. Then you'd claim to have only been allocated a 1,000 and would convince yourselves you'd sold out the full away allocation.

When we took our full allocation of 5,000 to Man City (despite knowing we'd probably get demolished) you called us glory hunters!

Hi

I had stated this opinion of Todd Kane way before his injury so not just a recent opinion

Against poor opposition such as Blackpool last week or Barnsley early season going forward he is ok.

When asked to defend he is poor. Never wins a defensive header and allows crosses to be put into the box constantly and thirdly is caught out of position time and again.

As for Gestede I thought he was outstanding today. Was played on the Right wing all second half this afternoon and win headers all afternoon just that Rhodes was atrocious.

Gestede also prevented lots of Middlesbrough build up play from the back in the first half which Rhodes was not bothered doing.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that some players don't go out to do their best. Some even go out to get themselves booked or sent off. If all players went out to do their best every match than Sir Alex Ferguson and other inspirational motivators would be redundant. I am not suggesting that Rhodes is deliberately under-performing but perhaps, subconsciously, he is not entirely motivated.

Well that just proves my point, when have you recently taken 5,000 away?

Back to the every day run of the mill stuff and you take 691 to. Game far more important than an FA cup.3rd round replay.

So it would appear that the 4309 at the Etihad WERE actually glory hunters after all.

You sound like glentoran or the troll.

Back to the every day run of the mill stuff and you had less against Millwall at home than we did, yet you're 2nd in the League and the best supported town club in the country (apparently)

When you go up (something else which is apparently certain) I assume there's only going to be between 10,000-13,000 at Turd Ville because you don't have plastics?

We lost but didn't park the bus like Rovers have done in many away games this season and but for the good form of your keeper would have been beaten out of sight hence making him man of the match.

If you want to compare results I could compare a few this season so let's not go down that road.

As for the game I thought it was a good point for Rovers. The Riverside has been a tuff place to go since a change in manager. A point is a point and another one gained towards the hope of reaching the playoffs. Still a lot to play for , for both are clubs.

Questions

Why was Dunn on for so long? The game totally passed him by.

Is Rhodes beyond being substituted he was 100% totally ineffectual.

Time for Todd Kane to be sent back to Chelsea I am afraid. Totally out of his depth as a defender and continually our weakest link.
todd kane continually our weakest link lol ? did he not get man of the match last week?
It's all about opinions and he was consistently weak today both in the air and preventing constant crosses raining in

16 corners to Borough says it all

players covering for his mistakes.

Bowyer at least got one substitution right and made it at half time 20 minutes too late as Middlesbrough poured down our right.and should have had two or three.
yup it is all about opinions im just pointing out that your opinion that kane should be sent back to chelsea and he his CONTINUALLY our weakest player is an odd opinion as he has only been put back in the team a couple of weeks and last week he got the man of the match lol i do admit though he was rubbish today as was cairney and rhodes and gestede and dunn but a point isnt exaclty a bad result

Opinion - Henley was shredded in the game against Derby, and you Matt blamed Cairney, even though the derby winger was beating Henley one on one without needing support from any other player. Regardless of what happened today Kane has shown himself to be a stronger player than Henley throughout his time at Rovers.

Hi Pompey, That's the beauty of having a keeper of Robbo's quality. He saved us today, but I dare say that if he had been available all season we might have had a few more points and been sitting comfortably in the play off positions. That's football though. As for promotion, it's too early for us but another couple of seasons with this team and we could be knocking on the door. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Well he should be on his money. If he's not happy here he should be busting a gut to impress bigger clubs. That way we would benefit from his goals / form and he would put himself in the shop window. I hope he stays though.

Yes I'm highly embarrassed that were in an automatic promotion spot with the hottest striker outside the premiership. I can barely lift my head when I go out such is the shame.

Yes the home crowds are a little disappointing but if the by-product is our league position and form then who gives a toss of we get 20,000 11,000 or 5,000 at home?

What score was it when Burnley went to The Riverside?
We lost but didn't park the bus like Rovers have done in many away games this season and but for the good form of your keeper would have been beaten out of sight hence making him man of the match.

If you want to compare results I could compare a few this season so let's not go down that road.

As for the game I thought it was a good point for Rovers. The Riverside has been a tuff place to go since a change in manager. A point is a point and another one gained towards the hope of reaching the playoffs. Still a lot to play for , for both are clubs.

Hi Harwood, very true I have always rated Robbo and he done his job yesterday which is all you can ask and want your keeper to do.

This is a tuff league as we all know and are teams aren't going to dominate or win every game. If you stay in the game the team then has a chance to take something away from it. A Point is a point at the end of the day and better to take that than none.

Playoffs maybe beyond Rovers this season but finishing well up the table will be a good platform for next season.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 2nd spot but it will be very hard with Derby , Forest and QPR. Forest I feel are the ones I'm looking at and if we beat them the Turf then we may kick on.

Best of luck for the rest of the season too Harwood but not on derby day ey , it's about time we won one :0).

Dave, whether you like it or not the play off places are in reach for us and around 10 other clubs, we are only 4 points away after all and even a complete knob-headed moron like you has to admit that finishing 3rd with say 80 points is no different to finish 6th with 55 points, both teams end up with a chance of promotion.

Remember Palace last year? At this point of the season they were totally out of it, but went up through the play offs.

I and the majority of sensible Rovers posters on here have been pretty consistent in our assessments so far, play offs would be nice but promotion through any route would simply not be good for the club this season.

To be honest I think that you would be far better supporting Burnley.

Calm down Dingles, you only beat Millwall at home.

5 wins in 18 games is still not promotion form.

When your two good players leave for buttons at summer, you will be a poor ageing side once again.

Watched the football league show last night and Robbo's saves where outstanding, we would have had a real spanking without him. Their goalkeeper only one tame save to make all game. The only good thing about this match was that we managed to salvage a point even though we didn't deserve it Can't see that this mentality of staying in the game as being the priority rather than taking the game to opposition to win the game is going to get us a play off place this season, hope I am wrong.

You are far to sensible Pompey Claret, your posts are a welcome change from the ravings of the sad attention seeker with his multiple accounts.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to joining you at Wembley at the end of the season.
Cheers greenscreener, your comment is much appreciated. I know there are one or two from both sides that post comments that go beyond good banter and sometimes with those that do go over the top I let myself slip to there level.

I try and be positive and give my honest opinion on things. I know not all agree with what is said but that's the food for thought when opinions are all individual and open for debate.

All the best

HMM, so given your logic we should have opened out and had a go at Boro, despite their current form at home?
That is probably one reason why GB is manager not you, for which I am eternally greatful
We would have got spanked good and proper with that approach
We had no right to be anywhere near the play offs this term. That we are is a great credit to GB. If we miss out, so be it , but GB will be able to hold his head up whatever!

You can always tell when Burnley have won because all the poor mid table side supporting fools can blabber on about is attendances.

Poor old Blackburn.
And don't forget you can tell when Burnley have won because their lonely non attending "fans" flood the Rovers page.

To be fair though it has been quiet on here for the past 35 years.

Ermmm, your Directors, Bank Manager and your accountants to name but 3?
I see Flood has slithered back in to your Club, any connection to the smell of possible promotion money. I believe he did quite well out of the last pot of Premiership money??
Is Mr. Flood fit and proper person?
Just asking like? Because everything is run perfectly at dingle fc!

I quite like the signing of Varney...we've quietly gone about our business amidst the chaos at Elland Road and managed to secure the services of a very hard working striker with a point to prove.
Looking at yesterdays game, our bench now looks superb, Morris and Henley as cover for defence, Evans can change the game for us in midfield, Conway out wide and Varney up front - thats without King, who is probably the most exciting of them all
Something about us at the moment isnt quite right, but with the way Bowyer is going about his business, its clear to see that we're very very close to going on a superb run!!

Fair point mate.

Wether they parked the bus or not football is a results business.

Fair play to Burnley they're doing really well and I'm more than happy with Rovers efforts this season. Progress.

Not hurting, not bitter and certainly not jealous.
I mean jealous of a tin pot nowhere club that are currently near the top of the second tier of football. With no hope of sustaining it going foward, sh 1t ground no fans etc, nah, nothing to be jealous of.
I note you have no response to the Directors question? Flood and Kilby back together in the hope of milking the Turf Moor cash cow
Good luck to you with your massive rise in the league, pity about the money you will never see
Remember, it is only temporary
See you in May

Opinion - Henley was shredded in the game against Derby, and you Matt blamed Cairney, even though the derby winger was beating Henley one on one without needing support from any other player. Regardless of what happened today Kane has shown himself to be a stronger player than Henley throughout his time at Rovers.
I respect your opinion however it is turning out to be a huge weakness of ours for opposition coaches and managers are sussing our RB weakness out.

Middlesbrough knew from the off to go down our right Carryol turned Kane inside out the whole first half and we were lucky not to have conceded two or three by the interval.

Kane going forward against the likes of Blackpool Barnsley etc is fine however in many games we are looking for solid defenders often when cover in front of them is absent especially when Bowyer is playing a 4 1 2 1 2 formation away from home and expecting Cairney and Taylor to push out wide from what is in effect a very narrow midfield.

Saturday Taylor had to play wide right half way through the first half just to try to help Kane out. Spurr on the other hand is a more solid defensive player and does not require the same amount of protection as Kane or Henley.

Also for the entire second half, apart from the last few minutes when Varney came on Gestede played on the right wing to attempt to stop George Friend raiding down the left putting pressure on Henley.

Our right back position is a real cause for concern in my opinion.
