Paul Wheelock column: Redknapp has it so wrong on Blackburn Rovers striker Rhodes

Lancashire Telegraph: Harry Redknapp Harry Redknapp

HARRY Redknapp is not a Lancashire Telegraph reader then.

For if he was, the QPR boss would never have needed to address the West London press about his apparently doomed pursuit of Rovers’ top scorer Jordan Rhodes.

Rovers, according to Redknapp, ‘want their money back – they want their £8m or £9m for him’.

That contradicts what Gary Bowyer told us just two weeks ago.

“I was never very good at maths but we paid £8m for him, then he goes and scores the most goals in the calendar year – more than Luis Suarez – and yet he is still valued at £8m,” Bowyer said.

“That doesn’t quite add up to me – but then again I’m no Carol Vorderman!”

Then again even if Redknapp had seen his Rovers counterpart’s memorable comments, it is unlikely they would have prevented him from putting his admiration for Rhodes on record.

This is what Redknapp does at this time of year – he talks about players from other clubs.

But while his words may be lapped up by the media – and let’s not be hypocritical here, as soon as what he said about Rhodes emerged yesterday they went straight on to our website – that does not excuse him for what is really poor form.

Not that his thinly veiled attempt to drive down the prolific striker’s price publicly is likely to work. Why would it?

Why would Rovers be tempted to sell Rhodes – a player who has scored an incredible 44 goals in 76 appearances since his £8m move from Huddersfield Town – for a similar amount for which they bought him?

And even if a club comes in with – to quote Bowyer – an ‘astronomical bid’, they should resist as he is critical to their hopes of promotion.

If Rhodes remains a Rovers player come February 1 then the club’s January transfer window dealings will have been a success – especially given what has happened up to now.

They have completed the signings of Tom Cairney and Rudy Gestede – with the £600,000 paid for the former an absolute steal – while managing to shift more than 10 players not in Bowyer’s first-team plans off the books.

Crucially, however, the vast majority of those players have gone out on loan rather than on permanent deals.

And with Rovers facing the very real prospect of Financial Fair Play penalties next season there is no getting around the fact that they will, eventually, have to sell a player who they do not want to lose – and maybe sooner rather than later if Crystal Palace follow up their long-held interest in captain Scott Dann with an official bid.

But sorry to disappoint you, Harry, that player is not Rhodes.

Certainly not, as he says, at ‘£8m or £9m’.

No Sale form the club, If a player's agent play games, then it can happen.

Sale or No sale game in the last week of the window.

Rhodes is more than 20 mil in the current chart.......so Harry can dream.

the Venkys and idiotic Management team at the time paid well over the odds for Rhodes and unless he is sold in the near future he will eventually go for a fraction of what the Rovers paid for him - and as for quotes of he's worth £20m or comparing with Suarez - you've got to be out of your mind - no proven ability at top level!!

Assume that Rhodes is a decent striker at Championship level but would probably not fare very well in the Prem. If this is true, we paid way over the odds for him and his value to another other team will be less than what we paid.
For comparison, look what other Championship level strikers have been sold for. Having said that, I hope we can keep him. He is the best goalscorer we have.

We signed him as a League One player, and everyone asked if he could cut it in the championship. Clearly he can, so I dont see why he cant in the Premier League, for a mid to lower table team.

Obviously need to keep him to have any chance of getting back in the Premier League, he seems happy here so don't see him leaving anytime soon. Helps that he is on £35k a week!

I don't agree with anyone on here as I feel the only way we will get into the premier league is to have a team that contributes goals from every area not one guy with 17 goals and the next one with 2 goals.
We should look at selling him in the summer to achieve a transfer chest big enough to buy 3 decent players ,hopefully we can offload Best as well for a couple of million so we can start playing a more positive style of team football.

Rhodes was bought to score goals and that's what he does ,why do people complain about the other aspects of his game, its like buying a Ferrari and complaining about the boot space, the lack of support around him is not his fault. Each member of the team has a job to do his is to score goals , for the guys around him it is to get the ball to him in the box and contribute with some goals themselves. Every transfer fee represents a gamble only time will tell if it was value for money, in terms cost per goal I would say by the end of his Rovers playing days Rhodes will be right up their.

Harrys just stirring and who cares QPR are the ones with the biggest worries in the championship at the minute if they don't go up the bubble really will burst.

Having overpaid for the player and paying him Premiership wages getting your money back would be a good deal.

A lot of people keep mentioning Rhodes's lack of pace, but some players don't need pace. Take Teddy Sherringham for example, he was a top player who never had pace.

Rhodes's game plan is play on the shoulder of the last defender turn him and get a shot off. Usually, once he has turned the last defender he is already in a position to have a go, and therefore pace isn't essential in the role he plays.

Personally, I think it is far more important to have your wide players with an ambundance of pace as these are the people who carry the ball from denfence to attack, and therefore the faster they can do this the better.

If the Rovers are worried about FFP, what about QPR? They are taking a massive gamble that they will finish in the top two - the playoffs are a bit of a lottery so they are not guaranteed to go up if they finish 3rd. More than half their team is on Premiership wages and they still want to splash more cash on new signings. It wouldn't surprise me if they did a Leeds or a Pompey.

"Again the owners reiterated the fact that Jordan Rhodes isn't for sale and that we want to keep hold of him".

Let us hope that this is true. Look at what Chelsea have said about Juan Mata not being for sale this Tuesday and he has gone to their rival, Manchester United!

I think Forest, Derby and an outside bet being Middlesbrough might have something to say about that.

There isn't one club in this league that can be confident of promotion, top two or play offs, there are a lot of games to go and nearly everyone has to play each other.
