Blackburn Rovers v Birmingham City: Player ratings

Lancashire Telegraph: Jordan Rhodes got eight out of 10 Jordan Rhodes got eight out of 10

PAUL Wheelock gives his ratings for Blackburn Rovers’ 3-2 home loss to Birmingham City.

Do you agree with the match ratings? Give us your marks out of 10 using the comment facility below.

Paul Wheelock’s ratings:

Simon Eastwood 5: Made a shocking error for the killer third Birmingham goal but did recover to make two saves, one of them superb.

Adam Henley 6: Young right-back got forward well in the first half when he did not have his hands full with the two-goal Lee Novak.

Scott Dann 6: Endured an uncomfortable afternoon against giant striker Nikola Zigic but set up Jordan Rhodes’ second goal.

Grant Hanley 5: Partially to blame for Chris Burke’s goal, he should have cleared his lines rather than putting Simon Eastwood under pressure.

Tommy Spurr 6: Found himself up against a very tricky customer in former Rangers winger Burke.

Jason Lowe 6: Had to cover a lot of ground in the second half after his midfield partner Lee Williamson was sacrificed.

Lee Williamson 5: Withdrawn at half-time as Rovers threw caution to the wind. Crossed when should have shot in the first half.

Tom Cairney 6: Created good first-half chances for Williamson and Rhodes in the final home game of his loan.

Ruben Rochina 6: Made a lively start and missed an excellent opportunity to score before fading in influence.

Ben Marshall 7: His fine cross created Rhodes’ second goal and with better shooting could have scored himself.

Jordan Rhodes 8: Just where would Rovers be without him? His second-half double gave his side hope when there appeared none.

Malky has spent £50m of his ownwers money and dragged his team into the relegation zone. The mistakes were made on the pitch testerday, not in the dugout.

if you say so Mr Head in the Sand - but get real GB picks the team, the tactics etc etc and is falling far short of the mark - player ratings poor with one exception and from the majority of postings since yesterday Manager rating would be extremely poor - where he gets all his bullish comments from is hard to understand but then again he cant criticize his mates can he - simply not good enough!!

Ratings? All rubbish, it's Rovers. Home to Birmingham 13,400 home fans. Adults a tenner each. Kids a fiver then passed round to cover the ticket costs. Booing when 3-0 down. Run by Venky. Top manager. One good player whose leaving in the next 5 weeks. Venky cash can't be used to replace him cos of FFP.

Mega! 2014 anyone?

I would have made Marshall man of the match, edging on a 9, he was a constant threat all the game but especially in the second half and that lovely cross for Rhodes goal was perfect.

Do you remember when Leeds and Southampton were facing punitive action but carried on and tried to cheat the system?

Well the FA hammered them with a ten point deduction the following season. I know these circumstances were different but essentially the point still remains the same. If you are facing sanctions because of your poor financial management/health you cannot carry on spending, regardless of where it comes from. The FA will undoubtably see it as a big two fingers to them.

It's a bit like knowing you can't pay your credit card bill but yet maxing it to its limit.

If you can't see that then there is something seriously wrong with you.

They won't even put a reasonable offer in for Cairney and so risk losing him to a more ambitious, better run club.

But at the end of the day Hull don't want to keep him, so what's wrong?

As fans we get fixated on things, what happens if, when, where?

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter all that much does it?

He signs, he doesn't sign, Rhodes goes he doesn't go, ditto any other of our decent players, we bring someone in, we don't, and so on.

Players, managers, owners come and go, the only constant is the fans.

Guess what? We will still have a game to play a few days later, 11 guys will put on the blue and white and I will be there supporting them as I have been for 44 years and counting.

And after a couple of games we won't remember them,

Lee Williamson for me would never put a Rovers shirt on again. He has yet to play a good game. He is embarrassingly a yard or two short of pace. Cairney should play in the middle with Lowe. King and Marshall on the wings. Rochina and Rhodes up front. Anyone that moans Rochina cant defend is talking garbage, he is playing up front. I dont want him to defend. Jordan Rhodes cant defend but nobody moans about that. If Rochina gets tackled there should be enough players back to stop the opposite team. If we had played this way against Sheffield Wed and Birmingham we would have gained more points. Even if not these players at least this formation. Why does GB keep playing 2 defensive midfielders. It is so negative and if the first half against Birmingham is anything to go off it doesn't work.

True, and more and more of them are becoming sick of how we are being run by this incompetent set of so called owners that we have been lumbered with.

Cairney is one of the successes of the season so far if played in his proper position (what's that all about GB ?) Perhaps Bruce doesn't see him as a Prem player yet and has better options. We don't have that luxury.
If rumours are correct other teams have noticed what a good player he is and are showing interest, strengthening their squads, like well run clubs do.
We on the other hand are happy to let the better players go (apparently) weakening the squad in the hope that a replacement will be found.
The fans will only take so much of this idiotic way that we are being run and are showing their disappointment in various ways both on here and at the ground. They have every right to do so.
Cairney is just one example of Venkys mismanagement to date but if they carry on this way they will soon have the crowds that they deserve on Ewood Park.
