Full-time: QPR 0 Blackburn Rovers 0

Lancashire Telegraph: Gary Bowyer's Rovers claimed a point Gary Bowyer's Rovers claimed a point

ROVERS became only the second side this season to take a point off QPR at Loftus Road as they earned a share of the spoils with Harry Redknapp’s high flyers.

It was the Ewood Park outfit’s first clean sheet away from home in the Championship since October 3, 2012 – a run of 29 matches – and it was one they thoroughly deserved after producing an outstanding defensive performance from back to front.

Rovers made boss Gary Bowyer made four changes to the side which had started the desperately disappointing 3-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on Tuesday.

The biggest casualty was goalkeeper Jake Kean.

Kean paid the price for a series of individual errors – the latest being in the midweek second-half collapse at Portman Road – and was replaced between the posts by Simon Eastwood.

Eastwood, a summer signing from Portsmouth, was making his league debut for Rovers.

And it is one he will remember with pride.

Eastwood enjoyed a comfortable first half as the fired-up visitors completely snuffed out the threat of their expensively assembled hosts.

As well as being resolute at the back Rovers created good openings going forward and they could and should have been ahead at the break.

In the 18th minute the recalled Ben Marshall dug out a cross from the left to the back post where Jason Lowe was arriving.

The midfielder’s connection was not clean but his volley would have nestled in the back of the net had Hoops captain Clint Hill not got back to head it off the line and over the bar.

Chris Taylor – back in the side after missing the match against Ipswich because of personal reasons – wasted an even better opportunity in the 42nd minute when, totally unmarked 10 yards from goal, he headed Tommy Spurr’s left-wing cross over.

And there was still time for Rovers to go close again through captain Scott Dann, whose flicked header from a long Spurr throw landed inches past Rob Green’s left-hand post.

Bowyer’s team were put under more pressure after the restart and they were thankful to Eastwood for pulling off a quite breathtaking save in the 58th minute.

Seconds after Joey Barton had robbed Jordan Rhodes of a shooting opportunity inside the QPR box, a rapid counter attack ended with Andy Johnson sending over a low cross from the right.

Charlie Austin dummied it for the on-running Matt Phillips, who was brilliantly denied by Eastwood from point-blank range.

With Hoops substitutes Gary O’Neil and Niko Kranjcar making the impact their manager Redknapp would have desired, Rovers were coming under serious pressure.

And they survived an almighty double let-off in the 72nd minute.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s driven cross from the left was headed on to the post by Charlie Austin.

The ball then rebounded off Eastwood into the path of O’Neil, whose goal-bound strike hit former Burnley striker Austin and went wide.

That was the closest QPR went as Rovers held on for a point which leaves them 13th in the Championship, seven points behind the play-off places.

QPR: Green, Simpson, Hill, Dunne, Assou-Ekotto (Traore 87), Phillips (O’Neil 59), Barton, Carroll, Hoilett (Kranjcar 59), Austin, Johnson. Subs: Murphy, Onuoha, Jenas, Henry.

Rovers: Eastwood, Henley, Dann, Hanley, Spurr, Lowe, Williamson, Cairney (King 63, Dunn 85), Taylor, Marshall, Rhodes (Campbell 86). Subs: Kean, Kilgallon, Rochina, Judge.

Booked: Henley, Dann, Taylor, Spurr.

Referee: Darren Drysdale.

Attendance: 15,987 (809 away).

Just home from the Burnley game, and I'd like to thank Blackburn and their fans for the assistance they gave us today in getting back to top of the league! Burnley's win, combined with other results, including your draw, means we're now #1 on goal difference. I'm sure it'll give all Rovers fans a nice warm glow to know they've done their friends down the M65 such a favour! :-)

A good point as well as a performance now what is needed is CONSISTENCY and the ability to take ones chances.

I do not believe we are a Premiership side but oh boy would I like to be proved wrong.

Well done GB and the boys. Excellent clean sheet after waiting 27 away games. GB had to drop Kean, he may have lots of potential. but he is far too indecisive. Didn't realise we had such a good replacement in Eastwood.

According to Sky we should have been 2 up at half time, QPR seem to be the best team in the division so Rovers should fear no-one after today. Keep plugging away and you never know, they could still surprise us all.

You're welcome. Pity you struggled to beat Barnsley though. One win in six (against the bottom team) doesn't bode well and I think the slide will continue.
As for Rovers, well done GB for making the changes and a welcome point although unexpected. If some aren't performing they need to know they will be dropped. Those that played today took their chance by the sound of things. Just need to find some consistency though.

It was thought that away from home you could drive a coach and horses through Rovers' defence. Todays results may prove far more significant for an improving Rovers outfit vis a vis a fading Clarets team. We are now dark horses for promotion.

Burnley are totally irrelevant. Like Blackpool, they have been flattered by fluke results and will crash and burn as the long hard season unfolds. We will overtake both of them by March.

No problem guys, glad to be of help.

Just had a look at the match stats, ah well, what was it, lets see 40% possession at home against the bottom side in the league, a side without a manager if I remember correctly.

Not exactly a sparkling display was it?

I said on the pre match thread that I thought the team selections were interesting and so it proved to be, I had 5 live on in the kitchen and Sky in the living room and both reporters were saying the same, Rovers were the better side for long spells, again.

But the difference this time is we got something out of it, ok just the single point but more importantly that elusive clean sheet.

GB like the team is learning the hard way what football in this division is all about, making tough decisions and not being scared to make changes when things are getting tight.

A long way to go yet but this might just be the turning point we have all been waiting for.

RTID.

Interfesting what Rovers attendance would be without the subsidised tickets!!

Rovers next game:- £15!!! £10 seniors!!! £5 juniors!!

Burnleys next home game :- £28!!!! £17 Seniors !!! u22 £15!!!

DO YOU SPOT THE DIFFERENCE????

Nothing to do with support - Its a recession and people just cannot afford the tickets!!

Now even at those ridiclous prices I will speculate you will get circa 12,000 on next game and that includes season ticket holders!!

On that subject Burnley season tickets were similarily higher also!!

Meaning we contribute more to our gate every week than you - i.e. Our gate receipts exceed Rovers - Thats a fact!!!

Fair comments there Nick but I think the problem with many Rovers fans is this 'turning point' mentality where every result is greeted with hysteria, it's either 'end of the world, sack the manager' or 'now we will make the play offs'.

Two good days and one bad in the last week, if the point had come at Ipswich rather than QPR I think we would have taken that.

If The next four matches can bring 8 or 9 points it will put us in a reasonable position.

GENUINELY surprised you've fallen for the possession statistic thing, going off your previous analysis of games I thought you knew better than that. Possession doesn't mean much if most of the time a team's attacks are being broken down, and they're having to play in their own back third passing the ball back to the goalkeeper. According to the reports, Rovers were the better team at QPR yesterday. Just check the possession stats for rovers there, and surprise yourself.

We get a 0-0 draw and correspondents on here are talking of play-offs (again), and generally everything in the world is rosy. If that is all it takes to get the fans excited, Venkys really will think they've nothing to worry about. Get real people, the manager, players and club is a shadow of what it was, and hey, the sun is getting weaker by the week!

At last, after 29 games, a clean sheet away from home.
Let's hope that this result is a defining moment in our season.

I was pleased that GB at last came out and criticised a poor performace on Tuesday and then had the guts to drop players.
He also changed tactics for the QPR game - well done.

We are now 7 points (call it 8 points with goal difference) from a top six place so we must go on a winning run soon if we are to have any chance of the play-offs.
I am not one of those fans who simply want stability this season, I want us to challenge for promotion.

Let's start by winning our next 2 games and then go into the Xmas period full of confidence.
Millwall at home is a game that we must be looking to win so how about starting with Cairney in centre midfield and wth 2 up front for a change.

Well at least you are consistant, always crying in your cups for the good old days, but you would still be moaning if we had won 3 - 0 so what's the difference?

Isn't getting a little bit hopeful and "excited" what football is all about, well for real fans it is anyway, just ask the Dingles who keep posting on here; they have had permanent erections ever since the season started.

A good point no doubt but only because plan a worked - just. We were lucky that the great wall builder carried on his scoring hoodoo against us but had they scored would GB have known how to change it? I fear not. This is a good squad, potentially one of the best in the championship but they need managing by a skilled tactical brain and that ain't GB. Lovely guy and a top coach but not an experienced manager. Holloway is a proven expert in this league so get him in now before someone else does. I don't want to sound like Dangerous Dave but it is so frustrating to see the talent we have and not having our players deliver.

All proven OK, proven failures
Holloway got lucky once with 'Pool , Coyle with the Dingles, De Canio..do I need to go on?
Successful managers are rare as rocking horse poo. GB has as good a chance as anyone and he is Rovers through and through. Not some over paid prima Donna who will throw his toys when things get tough, as Holloway does!
And finally the number of people banging on about FFP that also want us to shell out a mega salary for a proven failure manager, jeez you couldn't make it up

If you have actually SEEN the talent we have, no matter what you think of it, then you don't sound like Dave at all.

This squad you like is largely the makings of GB's squad, with a lot of players he developed or brought to the club, what makes you think another manager would get more out of them, or are you wanting yet another round of expensive transfers to disrupt the club yet again ?

We are now 7 points (call it 8 points with goal difference) from a top six place so we must go on a winning run soon if we are to have any chance of the play-offs. I am not one of those fans who simply want stability this season, I want us to challenge for promotion. Let's start by winning our next 2 games and then go into the Xmas period full of confidence. Millwall at home is a game that we must be looking to win so how about starting with Cairney in centre midfield and wth 2 up front for a change.[/p][/quote]You are also only 8 points off relegation with other teams due a 'winning run' too. Get yourself down to Starbucks and smell the coffee. Midtablemugs. Manuel Hung
