Crewe Alexandra 0 Blackburn Rovers 1

GRANT Hanley's 11th-minute goal gave Blackburn Rovers victory in tonight's pre-season friendly at Crewe.

A number of other Rovers senior players featured in a 4-1 win over Fleetwood in a behind closed doors game earlier in the day.

Rovers team at Crewe: Jake Kean (Matty Urwin 72); Todd Kane (Anthony O’Connor 72), Scott Dann (Ryan Edwards 72), Grant Hanley (Raheem Hanley 72), Markus Olsson (Jack O'Connell 34); Alan Judge (Paulo Jorge 72), Alex Marrow (Fabio Nunes 39), Jason Lowe (Tim Payne 66), Chris Taylor (Hugo Fernandez 72); Ruben Rochina (John O’Sullivan 61); Jordan Rhodes (Patrick Antelmi 72). Another game where Rhodes was isolated upfront and failed to score (So much for Bowyer trying to get players to provide more opportunities). Lets hope that its not the second season curse. Good to see Best, King and even Campbell on form at Fleetwood who should have provided stern opposition, or at least a tougher challenge than CA. Interested to find out the team sheet from that game, see who was in net.

Why would Fleetwood, from a lower division, provide a tougher challenge than Crewe ?

Well Fleetwood want to be the upcoming team and so would have more of a point to prove than Crew. And sometimes its easier to play without a fan base behind you applying unneeded pressure. Not to mention it being a friendly lancs derby.

Blazerafe I completely disagree that Fleetwood would provide a tougher test than Crewe. You are entitled to your opinion but I do get confused by some opinions on here. Crewe are in league 1 and Fleetwod league 2. Surely Crewe are the better side and therefore tougher opposition. Anyway the bottom line is Rovers won both games but if truth be known even that doesn't matter really. The idea of these games is to get the lads fit and ready for the Derby game. That game they want to win. Any before that is irrelevant. I do agree with you regarding Rhodes. Rhodes should never play up front alone. He can't hold the ball up. He is however a fantastic goalscorer and if we played two up front with two wingers attacking the box he would put it away all the time. To me this is blatantly obvious but there have been several managers now that keep playing him isolated up front. So maybe it is me that's wrong and its not that obvious.

Wonder why Rhodes is isolated once again, that team doesn't look nothing like a promotion pushing squad,

Losing out to burnley on the likes of David jones, SHAMBLES

Grant holt to Wigan SHAMBLES

loos like maro is injured once again n yet kill agin can't even do 5 mins in pre season

Get a grip Boyer for frig sake n make some proven experienced signings will you n stop feeling sorry for the sick notes n the ones who couldn't make it 1st time round

I was willing to give chance but with these sort of signings is a shambles n lacking ambition

The last 2 season we have been dreadfull in CM but yet lose a player what's capable of doing the job n doing it well to a smaller lot smaller local rivals, lol, Dunny ain't gona last all season for frig sake,
Dickson ethuhu is a shambollic Effort of a so called player, I'd rather have mokoena back!

GET A GRIP N WAKE UP IF FANS CAN SEE WEEK SPOTS N MANAGMENT CAN'T THEN DON'T EVEN BOTHER STARTING THE SEASON, ANOTHER RELEGATION BATTLE AHEAD

That's what I thought too.

Regarding Rhodes being alone up front, I suspect that has more to do with needing 5 in midfield than wanting one up front. It's a while since i think we had a balanced 4 across the middle that were good enough to compete. Possibly Pederson, Tugay, Savage, Emerton ?

1-0 to the arsenal...... looks like we are going to have a mean defense this season.

with regards to Rhodes up front on his own..... well no one plays 442 anymore 451 to revert into a 433 is more the modern way.....I will agree apart from Rochina who had a reasonable game by all accounts we do need extra creativity if we are to play this way.

Fair point about the 433 being the fashion, I will blame it on my age, we lined up as 2-3-5 when I started playing !

Interested to find out the team sheet from that game, see who was in net.[/p]
Why would Fleetwood, from a lower division, provide a tougher challenge than Crewe ?[/p]
Well Fleetwood want to be the upcoming team and so would have more of a point to prove than Crew. And sometimes its easier to play without a fan base behind you applying unneeded pressure. Not to mention it being a friendly lancs derby.[/p]
Typical Blackburn fans, anyone posts a realistic opinion and they are castigated and called Dingle. The points above are valid, you are and continue to be a shambles. Burnley took a decent Championship level midfielder from under your noses, you have missed out on player after player, you have struggled to beat very poor opposition, and to top it all Mr Rhodes appears to have shot his load last season and can't finger a goal this time. It's looking grim for the Rovers under bib and cones man Bowyer. In Venky's we trust.

I take it some posters haven't actually been to any of the pre-season games, or watched much football in the last few years come to that. As 'alphajonjo' quite rightly points out, most teams play 451 these days as it gives them a solid core but allows for both pro-active and counter attacking football. Rhodes wasn't isolated up front. When we were attacking he had Judge and Taylor either side of him with Rochina sat just off his shoulder. This formation allows for other players to help score the goals instead of relying on one player. The fact that Rhodes hasn't scored in less than two games worth of pre-season football is hardly something to get your knickers in a twist about. There were a couple of points raised on here so I'll try and clear them up in the vain hope that we can start talking about the positives instead of generating negativity..

"So much for Bowyer trying to get players to provide more opportunities."

He has, it's just that not every opportunity is provided for Rhodes. Just because the match reports don't write about every time Rhodes touched the ball, it doesn't mean he didn't do it.

"Let's hope it's not the second season curse."

The season hasn't even started yet, give him a chance. Also, I expect him to be a marked man this year so playing 442 will only weaken the midfield. Playing 451 will allow for other players to get in on the action while maintaining some rigidity in the centre of the park.

"...Fleetwood who should have provided stern opposition, or at least a tougher challenge than CA."

As has already been pointed out, Crewe are in the division above Fleetwood so would've been expected to be the tougher opposition. Whether they were or not can't be proven as we fielded different players in both games.

"...if we played two up front with two wingers attacking the box he would put it away all the time."

We played two up front against Wrexham, with two wingers, and Rhodes didn't score then either. Also, our midfield was overrun so I'm guessing that's why Bowyer has opted to play 451 against teams playing a similar formation. If we play a team who's formation is 433 or 442, then Bowyer will probably start with two up front.

"...that team doesn't look nothing like a promotion pushing squad."

That 'team' didn't contain all of our first team squad. The fact that we managed to keep a clean sheet with Academy players playing the last twenty minutes shows that we've got good youngsters coming through.

"Losing out to Burnley on the likes of Dave Jones, SHAMBLES"

We didn't lose out to Burnley, we didn't go in for him. Had Bowyer really wanted him he'd be in our squad. He did okay for us but the way the pessimists are going on about him, you'd think he was another Tugay or Savage. One-footed workhorse? Lowe can use both of his feet and do exactly the same job. Williamson is also a more suitable player for this division.

"Grant Holt to Wigan SHAMBLES"

We were never in for Holt so what has his move to Wigan got to do with us? Besides, we've just got rid of one striker who sat on the bench getting paid stupid wages, why would we sign another? Anyway, DJ Campbell has a better scoring record than Holt.

As for the rest of 'lancs1985' post, it's full of so many inaccuracies I'd be here all week putting him straight. Stop looking for problems, or conjuring them up with your imagination, and get behind the players we do have.

If we only won every game 1-0, and Rhodes didnt score, where would we be?

He has, it's just that not every opportunity is provided for Rhodes. Just because the match reports don't write about every time Rhodes touched the ball, it doesn't mean he didn't do it.

The season hasn't even started yet, give him a chance. Also, I expect him to be a marked man this year so playing 442 will only weaken the midfield. Playing 451 will allow for other players to get in on the action while maintaining some rigidity in the centre of the park.

The dingles are very economical with facts. This one in particular ( fanny tickler ), saying the first stupid thing that comes into his or her head and bearing no resemblance to reality.
He can't understand that Bowyer has been at Rovers for years and worked his way through the ranks to manager. - Dyche , where did he come from ?
I know who my money is going on this season.

Fair point about the 433 being the fashion, I will blame it on my age, we lined up as 2-3-5 when I started playing !

@ 1952 rover. Why do you think that anyone who is not a happy clapper, like your good self is a dingle? Your only retort to anyone with a different opinion than you, is to call them a Dingle. Instead of that, why not construct a post giving your reasons, as to why everything is rosy down at Ewood. You won't have a bad word said against the club, so tell us the positives. And no, I am NOT a Dingle.

Calm down!
Nothing will become clear until the end of the first few matches. Then we will have an idea which way the season will go. Until then let's not keep brickbatting each other. We have seen some positive signs during the close season that things are improving. Even the behind scenes management have not got their knickers in a twist recently, apart from the ST fiasco. No a direct fault of the Rovers.
So come on praise were it is due GB and company finally seem to be getting the house in order.

We havnt lost a player...he was never ours! Have we lost Bentley too, and Rekik? Who is to say we were ever in for Jones?... granted he did a job, but its creativity we need and that he did not provide.

On another matter, last night was A FRIENDLY. The result is irrelevant! Utd and City lost last week...what shocking seasons they'll be having now eh!

Grant Holt comments???...Go and fill ya' glue bag back up... were we ever interested in Holt?...we have no divine right to sign players, so how is him not signing for Rovers a SHAMBLES? He is 33, over weight, prone to injuries and the odd red card and will command high wages. Is he really that great a signing ?

Rhodes will open the account in the first game:)) this is just buildup time with angle , passes and accuracy. So just enjoy the game with little fight on defenders in the box.

Quality item there Mr Srvp28.

"So much for Bowyer trying to get players to provide more opportunities." He has, it's just that not every opportunity is provided for Rhodes. Just because the match reports don't write about every time Rhodes touched the ball, it doesn't mean he didn't do it. "Let's hope it's not the second season curse." The season hasn't even started yet, give him a chance. Also, I expect him to be a marked man this year so playing 442 will only weaken the midfield. Playing 451 will allow for other players to get in on the action while maintaining some rigidity in the centre of the park. "...Fleetwood who should have provided stern opposition, or at least a tougher challenge than CA." As has already been pointed out, Crewe are in the division above Fleetwood so would've been expected to be the tougher opposition. Whether they were or not can't be proven as we fielded different players in both games. "...if we played two up front with two wingers attacking the box he would put it away all the time." We played two up front against Wrexham, with two wingers, and Rhodes didn't score then either. Also, our midfield was overrun so I'm guessing that's why Bowyer has opted to play 451 against teams playing a similar formation. If we play a team who's formation is 433 or 442, then Bowyer will probably start with two up front. "...that team doesn't look nothing like a promotion pushing squad." That 'team' didn't contain all of our first team squad. The fact that we managed to keep a clean sheet with Academy players playing the last twenty minutes shows that we've got good youngsters coming through. "Losing out to Burnley on the likes of Dave Jones, SHAMBLES" We didn't lose out to Burnley, we didn't go in for him. "Grant Holt to Wigan SHAMBLES" We were never in for Holt so what has his move to Wigan got to do with us? Besides, we've just got rid of one striker who sat on the bench getting paid stupid wages, why would we sign another? Anyway, DJ Campbell has a better scoring record than Holt. As for the rest of 'lancs1985' post, it's full of so many inaccuracies I'd be here all week putting him straight. Stop looking for problems, or conjuring them up with your imagination, and get behind the players we do have. If we only won every game 1-0, and Rhodes didnt score, where would we be?[/p]
Quality item there Mr Srvp28. Arte et labore Road Runner Road Runner

Well that's three of you then.
Anyway what's wrong with Fred Else posting on here ? I know Mick McGrath and Mike Ferguson do. Where has he tried to 'counter any positive posters' ?
More bulls***
Yeah right, its Fred Else course it is. Bogus poster all the way, as soon as anyone makes a positive post either Modan rants or silly nostalgia stories suddenly block the thread.
I have been using this site for several years and simple observation means I have seen this again and again
Bogus fans trying to control the agenda on the threads

Happy that Rovers are undefeated as yet, and only 1 goal in 3 games conceded, and I know its more about building up match fitness. My concern though is the lack of goals we are scoring against what should be inferior opposition.

Don't read too much into friendlies. The result is irrelevant. They're all about getting the players fit , seeing which combinations gel and which players have the hunger for the season ahead.
Point of interest : Crewe were down here playing at Truro last Friday and only managed to scrape a 2-1 win..
( Though, by all accounts they scored somewhat better down the road in Redruth later in the evening ! )

If Craig Short is coaching the defense, what is Colin Hendry doing now ?
Also, nothing wrong with mentioning old games. Us old timers can re-live them a bit. I too saw us demolish Spurs and saw Tommy Briggs bang seven in against Bristol Rovers in 1955. It will be a long time before any younger supporters will see teams like that again.
So lighten up a bit lads. We are all Rovers.

Tere is nothing wrong in reminiscence but some on here feel threatened by it. I wonder why?
