Appleton left frustrated by defeat
7:12pm Saturday 19th January 2013 in Football
BLACKBURN Rovers boss Michael Appleton believes this afternoon's 2-1 defeat to Charlton will be helpful in the long run.
Appleton's Rovers bow ended in defeat, as Charlton ended the hosts' four match unbeaten streak
"It was frustrating, but it was helpful," Appleton said.
"It has given me an idea of the players who are going to be able to cope with the pressures that come with playing for the football club.
"I've just said to the players that we are a big fish in a smaller pond to what they were used to playing in last and previous seasons and you've got to be able to cope with the pressures that come with that.
"You've got to be brave, you've got to want to get on the ball, you've got to play with an urgency and we struggled a little bit today with that.
"Also you've to keep it nice and tight and the goals that we've given away, one is a wonder strike, but the second one was disappointing to concede."

Straight out of the Ricky Gervais school of management speak, how disappointing that MA's first post match comment is so far off the mark.
We're actually a long overdue relegated side, with no star players anymore. So you could say we're small fry in a bigger pool (more teams and games)
When the owners "do one" on 65mins, it speaks volumes!!

Your fans have already turned on Appleton without giving him a chance, he should get out before he gets a black mark on his CV. You cant do anything in football without the supporters united behind you as Kean found out when he was doing a **** good job of taking you back up, if you get relegated only one factor is to blame .... People seem to be calling for "passion?" Maybe we could do the haka before kick off to show our desire?
What we need and have needed for a while is some common sense, firstly from the fans (don't be so detrimental), secondly from the players (better decision making/smart play) and finally from the manager (don't demand passion/fire etc, get the lads playing clever stuff, brains not hearts. F the "fans," Rovers players play against 13 men most weeks, other teams 12th man and our 12th man).
If these things don't happen then Venkys might as well bulldoze Ewood and the "supporters" can go find something else to "contribute" towards eg. Al Qaeda or human trafficking

If these muppets reckon blathering about getting Appleton, Berg, Hendry, Agnew, Singh, Shaw, the Rao's, Steve Kean, Jake Kean, the club shop staff, ball boys, mascots, tea ladies etc out the club will help the club they are deluded. Basically thats exactly what they are, DELUDED, and they have been for a few years.
I gave up a while ago with this forum because it just appeared to be made up of seven fingered idiots (yes seven!).
If only these "supporters" knew how to sieve through the stories they read/heard then there wouldn't be any issues.
Who's going to buy the club? We'd be far and away better off with the Venkys than any "supporters" trust.
Anyway carry on whipping yourselves up into a frenzy. Seem to be doing a good job so far.

Further relegation causing Venky's to give up and leave.
Venky's up and leave getting tired of funding (sorry asset stripping) the club because there's no money left in the club.
So starts an era where several thousand would-be supporters chant at away games, cause disruption inside and outside the ground and generally spend their time criticising and questioning every move, creating wild theories and using subjective term of deference towards owners managers and players and create divisions amongst fans, all helped along and substantiated by the media circus around them.
What do they hope to gain?
Venky's will sell to them for tuppence and leave of course so life-long supporters of the club can "take their club back" to the heady heights of the premiership.
All for the love of the club of course.
No thanks Mr Mullan. We have enough snakes to contend with.

Firstly a sincere thanks to the boo boys who just about got it right this time, I even joined in with the "Cheerio" chants when Venky's thought the game was over after 65 minutes, in actual fact they were right, they might know just a little more about football than we thought, and I am not laughing.
We were well beaten by what is basically a pathetic excuse for a football team, we should have taken them to the cleaners but in reality we couldn't have beaten a team of 5 year olds on this display.
The only player who came out of this debacle with any credit from me was Murphy, why is it that one of our shortest players is the only one we have who can head a ball, or even win a ball in midfield?
I personally don't blame Appleton, I just about caught most of his interview on Radio Rovers when I got back to the car and I totally agree with what he said.
These players are well paid, if they can't raise their game when the "owners" (sic) are in town for the first time in donkeys, or when they need to impress a new manager then we have to ask should any of them be wearing the blue and white?
I don't think so.
Because I was disgusted today, totally, absolutely disgusted.
And Appleton is right in what he said, if you don't want to play for Blackburn Rovers, and there are several who don't. if you can't look in a mirror today and say I gave my best, then I will have you out of the club unless things change.
Appleton now needs to follow up on that, forget promotion, if we went up this season we wouldn't get a single point next season, the rest of the season has to be about getting rid of the dross imposed on us by Kean and Shebby and getting in some players with heart.
The team on Tuesday could be quite interesting.
But I will be there, suffering as usual.

Its lazy football and one of things rival teams get really good at evading and Charlton certainly appeared to have done their homework.
Hopefully MA will work the more tight system he talked about and get them playing quality football again, as this game was aweful. I think even the usually positive supporters will have found it hard to stomach.

The situation is what it is, and no amount of dreaming on past glories is going to change it, what you used to be and what you are now are entirely different eras. Your past PL presence is irrelevant now, you're in the Championship competing to reach the PL against other teams equally as committed as you, if not more so at the moment.
Michael Appleton needs time to get the players on his side, they didn't want him, they wanted the other chap whom looked to be doing quite well for you. Why he didn't get the job I've no idea? Not allowing him to continue with the good work is most perplexing.
Two things count for the fan, getting the wins, and the passion displayed at achieving them, that combination is what drives the energy of the fans. Get the fans behind you and you incentivise the players and staff...it's a looped feedback mechanism that truly motivates, and it is very absent at the moment at Ewood's roost.
Next up is a harder match than Charlton on Tuesday night, perhaps Brighton may not travel well in the cold? A draw with them will be a good result, a win even better, but whilst the fractions remain between owners and fans, between players and newly-installed manager, losses look to be the just rewards.

Whilst he is doing this, Shaw needs to get down to Witton Park and find a couple of centre backs faster and smarter than Hanley and Dann. That shouldn't be too difficult.
Next, he should tell his core first team squad that if they don't put in the required shifts but instead of being dropped, which is in fact the reward of a day's paid holiday, he should stick them in the pie shops on all corners of the ground to learn how to do a proper job.
Then, he should watch a few videos of successful football teams and count how many players they put in their front line. ( clue: more than one )
Having done all these, he should sit down with Gary Bowyer and ask him for a few lessons in motivation and inspiration.
When he has done all this, his work here is done and all that's left for him to do is show Nigel Adkins where his car parking space and office is.

I think we have to be a bit more discerning than just cut the squad to the bone.
What I'm seeing on the pitch is a shambolic collection of players without a plan, no shape, no strategy, no leadership or direction, some playing out of position and few prepared physically or mentally enough to move 'off the ball'.
I think we certainly need a centre mid and centre half but frankly bringing in new players is pointless if the team overall is not organised tactically and fit enough to compete.
Not MA's fault, but it's his job now to fix it.

Most suggestions of who to be next manager were, to be realistic and honest, highly delusional and backwards. Calls for Dalglish and Souness back - there success was 10 years + ago.
Dalgishs' success with us was around 20 years ago, a lot has changed. You can see how out of touch he was when he came back to manage Liverpool.
John Williams will never come back, he's worked his was to the top (Manchester City), so why would he come back. He left shortly after the Venky's took over. Despite us being the fans, we have no control at all.
The atmosphere from the start at Ewood was poor, it was like a ghost ship. Then Appleton was supposed to lead players (of which some seem to choose when to play well) to a win in his first game. Unrealistic.
A top manager wouldn't of accepted a contract with us if the fans keep battling an unwinnable battle with the Venky's. If the Venky's pack their bags, it'll have nothing to do with the actions of the fans. They are billionaires, you're hardly hurting their pockets by boycotting.

The problems start at the TOP and trickle downwards.
The players are TERRIBLE (thats Kean/JA and SS fault) but ANY players coming into this club soon understands that the club is a SHAMBLES and even if they try not to get involved in anything thats happening, eventually it effects them (even subconciously) and then performances suffer.
What needs to happen -
We have to sort the club out AT THE TOP.
Venkys HAVE to implement a PROPER OFF-FIELD STRUCTURE, they need to COMUNICATE and RE-ENGAGE SUPPORTERS and get them back on side, THEN they need to actually put their own money into the club and properly support the manager in the transfer market.
Until they do then you can appoint as many managers as you like, buy as many players as you like - it is IRRELEVANT, nothing will change.
Please stop talking about "going up this season" - it is a JOKE - the club is complete and utter turmoil, sure we may win the odd game and the "happy clappers" will come and and tell us we have "turned the corner" and that Venkys have "learned their lesson" - until they actually DO, learn their lesson and implement structural changes then the best we can hope for is to remain in this division, not go broke and keep up our unbeaten record against Burnley - that is the absolute BEST we can do.

Nothing at all wrong with some fans chanting "You don't know what your'e doing" at Venky's when they turned up yesterday, but the same fans need to consider what they are doing to the club as well.
Venky's are not stupid people, the investment they have put into Rovers is chicken feed to them and it hasn't worked for them or Rovers.

I watched with increasing dismay as a disorganised, unfit, collection of footballers demonstrated what happens when you are not properly prepared and motivated to compete in a professional football match.
With good management some of them can be turned round, and I agree there are some lost causes, but I think the problems are a bit deeper than just get rid of the all the players.
Because most of all I watched with disgust when the owners abandoned their seats and switched off the lights, so perfectly illustrating how much this club means to them.
The problems start at the top and 5hit rolls downhill.

Face it, they're just not interested, trying to give Venkys lessons on this site is pointless. On their part it's a failed business venture. WE can only hope that they realise the negative press they get far outweighs any positive image they might once have believed they'd get by being first Indians in Premiership.
The PR fim are here to tart up the Rovers for a sale.
As for "big fish in a small pool" that's a tune Rovers have been playing since the glory days of the 1880s when Rovers virtually invented professional football and won the Cup three years running. There was a real blossoming under Jack but that was a flash in the pan in decades in the lower tier comforting ourselves that we were a big fish in a small pool. Since the war, we've spent more time outside the top division than in it.
Let's get a mind set of being a provincial club in a town of decined economic power doing well to hold onto a good heritage, proud to punch above our weight. A bit of modesty, some good longterm planning, reasonable and realistic expectation and who knows we might start doing OK again. This was the very course we were on until the Venkys disaster.
But there's no sugar daddy out there - the best we can do is hope to emulate the sensible pattern in recent year set by Stoke, Swansea and even by our dear neighbour and sensible former Rover - Davie Whelan down the road at Wigan.
That won't happen until Venkys, Singh and these small timers like Agnew go and we get a decent EXPERIENCED manager like Souey, King Kenny and yes, even Big Sam. And a responsible management. And a club owned at least in part. like Swansea, by the fans.

Answer to why Gary Bowyer didn't get the job is he stated clearly he didn't want it. He even turned down Appleton's offer to work with the first team which shows its little to do with politics and more to do with job satisfaction.
Bowyer is a specialist in his area and clearly enjoys discovering fresh talents and his pride in Phil Jones etc that he talked about is indicative of that fact.
The pitiful board room antics that Venky's brought with them and created are unlikely to just go away. Michael claims he has the full backing of the owners to make hiring and firing decisions, he should be capable of rising above it and at the moment there is little reason to doubt he can do it.
The media loves to focus on the boardroom divisions, blowing them well out of proportion; but on the pitch shouldn't these over-paid ball kicking so-called professionals should be well able to put aside any off-field shenanigans and concentrate on playing football for 90 mins??
And lastly to the fans, you are right that Rovers fans need to wake up to reality and realise we may well be here for a while and dwelling on where we were and how we got here is not going to get us back to the premiership.
But this is where I am at a loss.
Boycotting, protesting and demanding Venky's leave seems to be the order of the day, and this is coming from seemingly intelligent individuals like Mullan and co, which further derails any attempt to bringing stability to the club. Any fans like myself and others who try to rise above the boardroom circus and do what fans are supposed to do and support the team are called traitors and considered to be part of the problem.
So what do these groups want? We mass boycott the club and what? How do they expect this would play out?
Too many fans have been haemorrhaged by the dream of fan ownership and cannot see past the this misled dream. For this to happen, the unthinkable has now become sadly thinkable.
All the things people have posted on this article about what MA needs to do player-wise are sensible. But as fans we also have a role to play. Yesterday the atmosphere was rank. Anti-Venky's chanting was louder than the support itself, whilst the play on the field was even worse. As the twelfth man, we could motivate and raise the team spirit, its what fans do.
But it looks like that is the one support that Michael Appleton will have to do without as the support won't come back unless a play-off place looks likely for many of Rovers fanbase.

We've reached the point where we are at a crossroads and something has to be done. Obviously Venky's are still here to fix their image and their pride, otherwise why would they stay, the club is losing money and the players have been devalued.
If the Venky's fail to invest in the next 11 days, I think they've asked for it if there is no promotion and their reputation becomes irreparable.
Appelton, however, cannot be judged after yesterday. Only a handful of the players actually turned up, and seemed to let the atmosphere get to them. We don't need egotistical players in our current situation. He needs to find the men and get rid of the rotten apples.
In the event that Venky's invest (at least they saw the quality of their investment in Rhodes) then there is no excuse if we can't at least give Appleton a fair crack of the whip.
Just from the rumour mill, Dorrans could be joining next week from West Brom? I can't avoid a bit of optimism.

Being undefeated in our previous 4 games was misleading as all were poor teams or going through a bad patch. Charlton however are in form and played like it.
The test for MA is who he gets rid of and who he signs. You cannot judge a man on one game with other people's players. Come on show a bit of optimism we will improve once the sales and signings are done. Give the manager until the end of the season and criticise then if there is no improvement. We must get behind MA and the team he collects together. Our current atitude is doing no one any good.

I expect this pattern to continue under Appleton he hardly has a record to suggest he is a leader of men and his brand of football is hardly going to get everyone on the edge of their seats is it?
I too am annoyed that we have a group of players who seem to be deciding who they will and wont play for but this is a problem with the game globally and symptomatic of the fact that it is driven by business and money the values, concern and loyalty have been gone from the game for some time now. Money is god full stop.

I also believe that MA has abig test on his hands but I think he will do it, he is a hard man and will soon sort out who wants to play for the team and who doesn't...
I reckon some of the players had their own agenda yesterday and if that is the case then MA should get em sorted out or booted out. They get paid good money to play and perform competently for this club and if they have issues with that then they should raise them with the manager or get out of town.
On a less positive note - I just watched the video of the our owners arriving and was appalled to see what was a very rare opportunity to protest strongly but fairly against the Venky's (before during and after the game) turned into something that more closely resembled an EDL rally as the morons infiltrated it and cast further shame on the club. The hatred and abuse was clear to see and hear. For those fans asking why the Venkys didn't stay till the end of the match - well there is your answer - watch the video! In fact I am surprised they stayed to watch any of the game after that disgrace. They would have expected a protest but not one like that.
There goes any chance of getting our midfielder and centre half now...

On a more serious note the reception could and should have been handled better. Looked and sounded like a mob in full flight. We are better than this and not even Venkys for all their mistakes should have had this. Protest yes! Mob rule no!
Things will improve of that I am sure providing MA is backed by the owners.

I watched the clip and although I don't agree with the chanting (didn't hear anything abusive not saying there wasn't) but I kinda of understand it..........see it from these fans point FR......paying thier hard earned money every week only to see the club they love being dismantled
bit by bit making it resembling nothing like the club they supported 2 years previous...
......Then a convey of Rolls Royces pulling up similar to you'd expect at the oscars with occupants
giving the impression that they're doing the fans a favour by gracing them with their presents....the same occupants who are solely responsible for the demise of our club.......I don't blame these fans one iota .......BRFC is a plaything for Venkeys always has and always will be....can't possible hurt as much for me and you FR because we are distanced from the turmoil surrounding the club.....living up there with all the negativity most be soul destroying for the real fans.....so I understand any fans frustration!

But what a shot in the foot it would be for all of us if we the protest have screwed up the sale of the club. It is just possible that the Venkys could have had a potential buyer for the club with their entourage at the match. That could have been their reason for all of them making such a rare visit. No-one seems to have thought of that possibility?

i heard "we want venkys out, we want venkys out"...."scum"..."on

i have say that if there was racist chanting by any protester - then i hope that that fan(s) is dealt with appropriately by the authorities
whilst i would not protest against the venkys in the manner outside the directors entrance yesterday - i have to question what they venkys and their advisers expected when many view what they have done to our club as a systematic destruction of one of the few things in blackburn that had any semblance of civic pride?
i genuinely dont think they (venkys) have done it on purpose and personally believe it is more "c.ock up than conspiracy" but the end result is the same.
if some of you posters on here expected them to be welcomed with open arms - then you are sadly deluded.
again i don't believe in throwing projectiles at anybody - but come on the english have been doing it throughout the centuries with rotten tomatoes and veg, eggs etc at reviled figures of authority (royals, politicians etc). why would our beloved owners be any different?
yeah, sure there will be racists in our support base - just like there is in society - but don't tar everyone with the same brush - if there was racist abuse yesterday - it was isoloted (just like the dwight yorke incident - when the whole of the rovers crowd got castigated for the actions of one or two blokes from chorley - who called him a lazy black b'stard - truth is he was just a lazy b'stard).
i am not proud of the protesters - but have to say if somebody keeps poking a dog in the eye for over two years dont expect that dog to at some stage bite back.....yesterday was that day.
imagine what that would be like if it were dirty leeds or barcode supporters outside their ground yesterday

If they were intent on going to this particular game, they should've turned up early morning and gone in through a side entrance. To turn up at that time, in Rolls Royce Phantoms and pull up right in front of the JW stand was exceptionally bad planning. Madame must've wondered what on earth she had come to.
That's what they've done though. They've turned the club upside down due to atrocious decision making and listening to money grabbing thieves without masks like Anderson et al.
I hope Appleton sorts this bunch out. The ONLY thing that is going to bring the club back together is results and performances on the pitch now.
We needed an experienced manager but they wouldn't listen to the people that know - AGAIN
Good luck Appleton - you need it.
