Berg takes the positive despite Rovers' defeat to Millwall

Lancashire Telegraph: Henning Berg Henning Berg

Rovers boss Henning Berg insists if his side can become more clinical there will be plenty of positives this season.

Blackburn were beaten by 2-0 by Millwall on Saturday to drop out of the Championship play-off places but Berg believes his side are close to becoming the finished article ahead of back to back derbies against Bolton on Wednesday and Burnley on Sunday.

“We’ll have to work on the finishing to make sure that when we get into those good positions we score the goals,” said Berg.

“We did that against Peterborough and we would like to do that much more often.

“We could improve in terms of the final third. Our decision making in the final third can be better to give us even more chances.

“We get into good positions but decision making is lacking. That is something that we’ll have to improve.

“Offensively we have to find the right timing and balance in the through passes and the movement. We make some good runs but we didn’t use them.”

Only Barnsley have scored fewer home goals this season than Rovers and Berg knows full well that his side have to improve their finishing to get back among the lading pack in the Championship.

And he intends to have his side working hard ahead of the derby clashes with Bolton on Wednesday night and Burnley on Sunday.

“There is no days off before that game (Bolton) I can tell you,” Berg added. “We will have to make sure that our recovery is good and that we are all fine for the Wednesday game which we should be because these players are used to playing twice.”

The Norwegian knows that he needs to see his side become more ruthless and is calling for the cast of attacking players to help take the goalscoring burden of leading man Jordan Rhodes, who was often isolated against Millwall.

“He (Rhodes) is occupying two central defenders that gives a lot more space for other players like Ruben Rochina, Danny Murphy, Dickson Etuhu, Markus Olsson,” said Berg.

“The opposition can’t cover all those spaces. Jordan does a good job and makes sure he keeps them quiet. We need that bit of extra quality to find him in the last third and for other players to give him chances. We had a lot of half chances and were in good positions but we lacked that bit of cutting edge in the final third.”

Berg also felt substitute Josh King, who came on a second half substitute for his Rovers debut, showed promise.

“King did OK,” said Berg. “It’s his first game, he doesn’t know the players, he’s hardly trained with us, so we had to make sure he had a good look before he came on.

“With a little bit of luck he could have scored. it was a good debut.

“He showed what he could do. He has good pace and he gets into good positions in the box. He had two good chances. One was a good effort and one we need him to hit the target. At least he is getting into those positions but I think he did OK.”

I panicked when I saw the headline, as it sounded just like a Kean headline. But then I read the article and the words of actual logic and reasoning used by Berg, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Its not going to turn round over night - this weird unbalanced, & in places a bit average side that Kean built will not suddenly start thumping every team in the league.

As long as they seem to be getting better though I, and most fans I hope, will be happy.

Need some back to back wins now, starting weds. Still a breath of fresh air, with HB, i thought it was rather quiet in saturday, we need to be that 12th man. Would like to see more of vuckevic, he looks a real threat. Etuhu needs to up hes game too, onwards and upwards now, as long as were in promotion position for xmas, then maybe have a bit of a clear out, and bring a right winger in, and a few others, Cant wait for Leon best to come back too, hes VT on big screen at half time was good, hes itching to get back.. We know what you mean Henning, but please don't use the "P" word! Its not that I'm against positivity, its just that Kean twisted the word out of all recognition. The phrase now fills all rovers fans with anxiety.

Berg we could take a lot more positives when you finally start with 2 strikers especially at home. Granted we scored 4 goals away from home but that was against one of the worst sides in the league. After the 1st half on Saturday we somehow was still in the game we could easily have been 4 down. We need someone up front to assist with Rhodes, try starting Gomes alongside him.
Rochina is a great talent but needs to pass more, how many times on Saturday he never gave the right ball, please look up.
As for Robinson well the number of times he has been beaten by long range shots the tally mounts. For me he is way too slow, that was his worst game for a long time, real shame that Bunn was let go as young Kean is the only back up we have.
Roll on Wednesday night hopefully there will be a few more fans on board but no doubt they will still make their 1001 excuses!!!!!

Yes there are positives but the weaknesses that have been there all season are still there.

Midfield we lack a box to box player and midfield are failing to support a fragile back 5 - how many times did our midfield block compared to Millwalls? Their second goal who was supposed to be closing down?

Even when in possession we are not creating, Rhodes never got a sniff all afternoon nothing down the channels - Right flank was left to Henley - Left flank quality was from Martin Olsson while in the centre Rochina was again to keen to dribble than see the early option - poor decision making is why he is at Blackburn and not Barcelona

Henning, just point out the importance of Sunday's game to all the team.
The consequences of a defeat don't bear thinking about. When the team consisted of mostly local players they didn't need any encouragement to know that they must not lose. But in today's climate it is different. None of today's players know the history of this match and its importance to the fans. 34 years and counting, needs to be drummed into them but without frightening the living daylights out of them. They must go into the match full of confdence and show Burnley FC why it is 34 years since they beat us. I for one want to see the Rovers comments pages empty of Dingles on Sunday evening. That will mean one thing, the status quo has been maintained.

It seems obvious to me that the damage done by Kean and his cronies is far more serious than I had thought. From the top to the bottom of the whole club, the level of deconstruction has clearly been pretty severe over the past two or so years; the youth system, the reserves and first team, the management and leadership! - all need lengthy corrective action. I fear we are looking at next season before harbouring dreams of promotion back to the Premiership.

The team on Saturday were leaderless in defence (Givet can surely help there), clueless in midfield (Murphy should have been able able to help there, but is clearly now past it), and there were just a bunch of 'Kean's' imported individuals aimlessly running around up front! In marked contrast to the Millwall side, the Rovers did not play as a team, nor to a clearly understood system!

It's going to be a long season but I do think they are starting to move in the right direction.

I'm afraid that I can’t think of any positives to take from the game.
Rovers were well beaten by a decent Millwall team who played a simple 4-4-2 formation.
Yes they actually had 2 strikers working alongside each other – not the 4-4-1-1 favoured by Kean, Black and now it seems Berg.

Can someone please explain what was the point of signing a 5ft 11” striker and bringing him on the left side of midfield to replace Olsson.
Have we signed a striker or a winger? - he may be able to play both roles but surely he needed to go upfront to support the isolated Jordan Rhodes.

What will happen when Leon Best is fit? -
Will Berg continue to play 4-4-1-1 then ?

Turning to midfield, we have now had 18 games this season and in my opinion Murphy and Etuhu are not the right combination in the centre of midfield. They have no pace and there is little creativity.
They are both either playing an easy pass sideways or backwards rather than looking forward.

Formica is also not a right sided midfielder or winger – in fact on Saturday he disappeared from the right completely in the 2nd half. This had the effect of preventing Henley from getting forward in support.
I cannot understand why was Vukcevic not brought on much earlier?

At the back, Givet must start as a centre back.

Finally, we all know that Shebby Singh set Steve Kean a points target of 16 from his first 7 games.
So far Berg has only 5 points from 5 games.
I know it is still very early and I am willing to give Berg more time, however any hope of a possible automatic promotion is rapidly slipping away.

ean,Russian and Chinese billionaire wanted to buy Rovers in the last two years.BRFC is a Small town club with average gates 23,500 the fourth worst supported club in Premiership in the last 10 years.Blackburn is a small town population of 105,000 the second smallest town after Wigan population 85,000 in the Premier League in the last 18 yeas. The WAlkers have sold the club with the backing of the Rover' Board under Chaiman Robet Coar, people have short memories.Jack WAlker was a good man but since then football has moved to another level and Walkers were ready to sell to anyone with me Bucks.

An excellent commentary on the state of things at Ewood.

It took many, many years and patience to build the team that we had, and which was capable of holding it's own in the Premiership. It took Venkys only months to demolish it through their penny pinching and cost cutting.

It's ironic that their feeble attempts to save money has cost them millions (TV money ) after relegation. Serves them right as far as I'm concerned.

I know it is still very early and I am willing to give Berg more time, however any hope of a possible automatic promotion is rapidly slipping away.
good post good points just hope berg is not going for the kean spin!!!!!!!!!!!

Rome was not built in a day, we had a decent game against the current form side in this league. With a little more luck and sharper finishing we could have won it. More protection from the ref would not have gone amiss, ShitU could have been sent off x 2 in the first half..but hey thats the Championship I guess
Get off Bergs back, he can only work with the tools he has got ( pun intended in some cases ) He will make the two or three needed changes in January to get us kicking on for promotion, I am sure positive about that..6 points from the next two games!

Bergs morphing into Kean with comments like "taking positives" and what was all that drivel about finishing better? To finish you have to create chances and we didn't have any cutting edge to do that. He persists in having poor Rhodes ploughing a lone furrow up front and it is not working at home. What people are missing is that every visiting team are treating this as a chance to beat former premiership champions. No other P.L. winner has been relegated so its a one off opportunity and we through a lack of good coaching , players played out of position , and too many players for the same position causing this. It's all one dimensional, left sided attack and the decisive through ball (that rarely works ). Not once did I see a decent threat down the right on sat. We lack the ability to mix it up, centre midfield is AWFUL and hesitation and lack of confidence is rife at the back. Poor coaching, poor (cheap option) management and players on a highly played jolly who don't give a flying f**k about what it means to proper fans. At least its showing us who the proper fans are, I'll keep turning up along with 12,000 others because I'm Rovers to the core. Until this 3rd world peasant shower of 5hit have gone, nothing will change. Penny wise , pound mad is the root of all that is wrong at Ewood, and I wish people would stop saying its all Keans fault. Yes he was a t1t of the highest order, but who employed him? Who allowed dedicated and loyal staff to leave. Who allowed him to get rid of good players, who sanctioned getting that waste of oxygen Hendry in? Who appointed this Malaysian clown? Stop criticising this group who want to but the club back, at least their hearts in the right place. I won't boycott, I'd go to the ends of the earth to watch my beloved team, but I know the reason for the shambolic state the clubs in.

Not sure whe people are getting a 4-4-1-1 formation from....to me it looks like Blackburn are setup as a 4-2-3-1, Murphy & Etuhu sat infront of the back 4 with Rochina, Formica and Olsson then Rhodes.

I think we need a right back as we only have young henley and a natural right winger as Formica on saturday drifted into the centre far to often and didnt make any runs down the right wing.

Rhodes wants the ball to his feet, ebery goal hes scored has been when the ball is played to his feet!!! Givet in at CB for me he is by far our best defender!!!

Berg and the Venkys dont understand the importance of the Burnley game to the fans.

I cant sleep now! My head is banging! I feel sick!

Dont forget Berg hasn't yet apologied for leaving the ex-champions of 95 to join Man Utd (this was treason in itself)!

And have the Venkys moved into Mosley Street yet? Have they hell! Wheres the commitent!

There has been some improvement since HB took control but one thing is certain 'we will not get promoted with the midfield that started on saturday'.
We just can not play Murphy and Etuhu together and Formica Olson and Rochina together as they do not provide a good balance and frankly there is inefficient pace or work.
Six points this week will help but unfortunately Bolton always do well at Ewood.

Haha! well said!

The Venky's probably thought it was a 'no brainer'... We go down for a season, get relegation money and then come back up... Destroying what we had built for years in the process mind!! But ultimately getting paid back over 4 years what they paid for the club including debts... Player sales being a profit while milking the 'up and coming talents' in the freebie/cheap markets, Kean just being a wilful puppet front man....

And then BAMMMM!! 50 million just dangling in front of the money grabbing eyes, but they cant touch it just yet.... Nope, not at all just yet.... Now they have to start running a club properly, bring in a decent manager, start assigning backroom staff, paying big money for players, paying big wages too... So it seems that karma has thought up a nice way of saying a big F*** YOU to the Venkys for what they have done to the fans in the last 2 years...

There is of course another chapter to this tale maybe? If we dont make it back to the promissed land this season, what then? We're already operating at a large loss... Could this seemingly easy win/win deal turn into a money black hole for the Venkys or will the return eventually come back?? We'll just have to see! But one things for sure, once we start losing big time they will sell up and do one....

Isn't Hendrys employment to do with some director or whatever that he owes money too and he see,s this has a way of him repaying him his debt, what other reason would you employ him, with his track record both on and off the field

I am Rovers supporter all my life but two years of Kean in charge that was the time i stayed away.I have returned to Ewood Park as Berg has been appointed as the new Manager. The 10,000 fans who have stayed away even since Henning Berg been in charge. The thousand who were at the Cathedral raised £3 million to buy the club back. This ia damage limitation exercise and is further harming the club. The past with Walkers was memories i'll never forget.I am now looking into the future under Berg and his players.

In order to stop losing games at home there is a simple solution.

Just pick Colin Hendry.

I know he's 46 but he's still a proper violent nut job and he only needs to blow some of his 9% alcoholic fumes over the opposition forwards and they will hit the deck like a sack of turd.

HENDRY FOR MANAGER. WITH BIG PAY RISE. RECEIVABLE IN FRUIT MACHINE TOKENS.
