BURNLEY have had a second bid for Hearts striker Andrew Driver rejected.

Assistant boss Sandy Stewart has confirmed that the Clarets made an improved offer for the 20-year-old this week, but it once again failed to tempt the Tynecastle outfit.

A bid of £500,000 for the Oldham-born forward had previously been dismissed.

Stewart, who was unable to say exactly how much had been offered, said: "We made an increased offer for Andrew this week but that has been rejected by Hearts."

And he wouldn't be drawn on whether they would return with a third bid.

He added: "We'll have to wait and see. We've got other targets who may become available in the meantime."

The latest setback will cause further frustration for boss Owen Coyle as he tries to shape his squad in time for the start of the new season.

The Clarets have been thwarted in their attempts to sign a number of players, including Martin Paterson, Derek Riordan, Mark Kerr and Peruvian keeper Diego Penny.

And Stewart admitted the situation was far from ideal.

He said: "We haven't set a time limit. The ones we've bid for we would have liked to have had them tied up so then we only needed one or two more, but unfortunately that's not happened.

"It's never that easy in football, especially when you're talking about a top player.

"Not only will his own club want to keep him, but there will be other clubs interested."
