MARK Hughes insists he will not be rushed into making a decision over whether to sign Johann Vogel and Quinton Fortune.

The two midfielders, who are both free agents, are training with Blackburn in the hope they can persuade Hughes to snap them up permanently.

But, while the Rovers boss admits their big-match experience could prove useful during the run-in, he is adamant they have been invited in mainly with a view to next season.

"It's more with a view to next season in fairness," said Hughes, speaking ahead of tomorrow's home game with Fulham.

"It would be difficult for them to come in and make an immediate impact at Premier League level, particularly now at the business end of the season, but that option is still open to us.

"If I feel there is a deal to be done, which would allow them to participate from now until the end of the season, then we will do that.

"But in both cases, this is more to do with planning for next season."

Former Manchester United star Fortune has already spent a fortnight training with Rovers, and Vogel joined him at Brockhall earlier this week as he attempts to resurrect his career following an ill-fated spell in Spain with Real Betis.

"We are going to give Johann ample time," said Hughes.

"He and Quinton have both had a lack of games and I'm mindful of that, so I want to give them every opportunity.

"There's no timescale on it. Once I'm clear in my mind which way I'm going to go with both guys, then very quickly I will come to a decision.

"But there's no rush to get it done. We will take our time and hopefully make the right decisions."

Vogel boasts a wealth of experience at both club and international level, having played for PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan - amongst others - during a distinguished career.

Capped 94 times for his country, the anchorman, who turns 31 tomorrow, has played in two European Championships finals and one World Cup, and Hughes believes both he and Fortune have the right pedigree to succeed, providing they can prove their fitness.

"These are the type of players that we want to bring into the club," he said.

"They are of the right quality, and the right pedigree, and they've played at the top level.

"With Johann it's not as if he's been out with injuries.

"He's been in dispute with his club for six months, and that wasn't really of his doing, so it's not as if it's physiological issues that have kept him out, it's basically down to political issues.

"But he's through that now, and he's looking to get his career back on track."

Hughes has been in the market for midfield reinforcements since he sanctioned Robbie Savage's sale to Derby during the January transfer window but his number one target proved unobtainable.

Now the chance to add Vogel to the squad has presented itself, and Hughes admits the addition of a natural holding midfield player in his mould would be an asset to the squad.

He added: "The guys who play in there have to have that ability to retain possession for you because, on occasions, they have to receive the ball in key areas of the football field, and if you are not comfortable in possession then opposition teams can exploit that and very quickly get at your back four.

"You have to have good players in that position and we already have Tugay, Steven Reid, David Dunn and David Bentley, who can all play in there.

"So we do have options but maybe we need to look at a specialist guy who is there for that, and that's what we are looking at."
