THE season Blackburn Rovers won the Premiership is to be celebrated in a specially-commissioned play.

Shearer Or Me will be staged in May at the Thwaites Empire Theatre just a couple of hundred yards from Rovers Ewood Park ground.

The theatre will be a riot of blue and white as the audience is being encouraged to turn up in football shirts and Blackburn Drama Club, which is putting on the play, is also appealing for memorabilia celebrating the championship winning year.

Eric Nolan, who will be directing the play, said: "We want this to be a real celebration. As well as the play itself we are going to hold an exhibition commemorating the 1994/95 season and we want people to come forward with anything connected with that campaign."

Shearer or Me has been written by Peter Read and tells the story of a Blackburn Rovers fanatiic whose devotion to his club's persuit of the title threatens his relationship.

The play tells the story of that dramatic season culminating in the final game of the season - away at Anfield - where even though they lost, Kenny Dalglish's Rovers took the title.

"That season was a momentous one for the town and the area," said Eric Nolan, "and it's fitting that we celebrate it."

All the members of that Premiership winning squad are to be contacted and invited to attend one of the performances, including Alan Shearer the club's leading goalscorer during the season - now a BBC pundit.

"I've spoken to Alan's agent and sent him a copy of the script just to make sure he's happy about his name being used," said Eric. "He is very busy so we'll have to wait and see if he can make it."

The play will feature clips from the season being shown on screens in the theatre mixing in with live action.

"We want the songs and the fans' memories," said Eric. "We will try and include some of the songs into the show."

Blackburn Rovers is working with the drama club on the exhibition which will go on display in the Radio Lancashire building and then at Ewood Park where the club's community trust will work with local schools.

"People must have scarves or Shearer and Sutton hats from that season," said Eric. "Now's the time for them to get them out of the cupboard."

Shearer or Me runs from Tuesday, May 27 to Saturday, May 31. Tickets from the box office on 01254 680137.
