BUDDING athletes in and around Chorley are being urged to attend the inaugural general meeting of the town’s new ‘super club’ on May 1.

At the end of last year, Chorley’s two athletic clubs – Chorley AC and Chorley Harriers – voted to merge and will now be known as ‘Chorley Athletic and Tri Club’.

Formally constituted on April 1, they will take part in all competitions under the simple name of ‘Chorley’.

They are now holding their inaugural general meeting at their base, Chorley Cricket Club, on Wednesday, May 1, at 7.30pm.

“This is your golden opportunity for all to be involved in the creation of the new force for athletics in the area,” said promotions officer Terry Dickenson.

“Anyone with an interest in sport and the future of sport around Chorley would be most welcome and it gives you an opportunity to influence the development of the new club and be personally involved.

“This is not just for members of the former clubs (Chorley Athletic Club and Chorley Harriers and Triathlon) but it’s for anyone who wants to be involved in the sport of athletics either recreationally or competitively.”

The new club will be kitted in black, white and red stripes to reflect the colours of both parents. The vests would also include the word Chorley and carry the town’s emblem.

All of the current activities would be catered for including the triathlon, where the Harriers are well represented, and race walking – a speciality of Chorley AC.
