JOHN Wright has won two silver medals at the World Masters Track and Field Championships at Sacramento in California.

Combining with Michael Vassiliou, Jeff Battista and Paul Guest, the 52-year-old Chorley Athletic Club member helped the Great Britain 4x100m relay team to second in 46.49 seconds.

Then, with Bob Lewis replacing Guest, they matched their achievement in the 4x400m relay clocking 3:43:38.

Competing in the 50 to 54 age group, Wright was also sixth in the 100m and fourth in the 200m with respective times of 12.06 and 23.99 seconds.

As reported in Monday’s Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn Harriers Holly Bleasdale and Sophie Hitchon are set to take their places in the World Track and Field Championships at Daegu in South Korea after their victories in the UK Championships.

Holly cleared 4.56m in the pole vault and Sophie threw the hammer 67.59m, both captured by the BBC2 cameras.

In the same competition held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, Ribble Valley’s 18-year-old Sam Yates set a personal best to progress to the semi final of the men’s 800m, but even a second PB of 1:51:45 wasn’t enough for a spot in the final.

Clubmate Leigh Lennon also reached her semi in the 800m, where she recorded 2:08.64 for sixth.

Blackburn women’s captain Sarah Henton was sixth in the women’s discus final with 46.20m and there was sixth for Kelly Hilton too.

The Wigan Harrier from Chorley made 12.72m in the triple jump.

Meanwhile, Luke Evans of Blackburn was fourth in his 200m heat in 21.64 seconds.

Ben Fish and Tom Cornthwaite were second and third at the Northern Athletics 10,000m Championships, which were held in conjunction with the Northern Inter Counties match at Leigh.

Peter Newton, of Morpeth Harriers, was victorious in 30:09.3, while the two Blackburn Harriers crossed the line in 30:34.4 and 30:37.9.
