For the second year, Rossendale Harriers have taken a group of young athletes to the Lake District for a week of fun and training.

This year, 29 youngsters and five leaders left for five days to stay at Grasmere Thorney Howe Youth Centre.

Anthony Gotts and Andy Grenfell took the juniors on challenging training sessions each morning and there was a day of raft-building - to rescue the maiden from a nearby island, plus orienteering and even a jump into Lake Ullswater from scarily high rocks.

A navigation skills activity organised by Nick Harris and Paul Wadsworth was also greeted with great enthusiasm.

The Thursday saw the Harriers at Ambleside Sports Day. Many of them entered the BOFRA (British Open Fell Runners Association) race with excellent results. Laura Briggs, Heather Parker and Rebecca Swindells each achieved top three finishes. One intrepid Junior, Jake Campbell, even entered the junior wrestling competition at the games and finished a very credible third. Thursday evening there was a talk by Lancashire Sports Athletics Development Officer Dave Croxall.

Before coming home on Friday, there was just time for an ascent of Helvellyn.
