l It is a big weekend for the track and field athletes with the first round matches in the Northern League for seniors on Saturday, and the Young Athletes League for the juniors getting under way on Sunday.

l The second round of the English Junior Fell Championship takes place on Bank Holiday Monday as part of the Coiners Fell Race. The races start at 10.15am with age group races for U8 (over6), U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 all run separately. The venue is Mytholmroyd Community Centre, near Hebden Bridge. There is also a senior non-championship race of seven miles and 1100 feet of climb at 1.30pm.

l The Waterloo 15K race, organised by Southport Waterloo AC is on Monday at 11.30am from Merchant Taylor’s playing field, Hall Road, Crosby L23 8TZ. There is also a 5K Fun Run at 11.40am and a 3K Fun Run at 10.40am which you can enter from school year four. You can register until 30 minutes before each event and there will be a medal and T-shirt for every finisher of the 15K and 5K runs.

l The Easter Bunny Runs finish on Tuesday with the relays which start at 7.30pm from the Dimples Lane Quarry after registration at the Old Sun Hotel in Haworth, West Yorkshire.

The races are for teams of three who each run two miles. At this fun event, relay batons are eggs and almost any conceivable team combination is allowed.

l Chorley Harriers begin their Night Trail Series next Wednesday at 7.30pm. The new course along the trails and tracks of Astley Park is 4.4 miles long. Registration is at the Baron’s Rest pub in Astley Village PR7 1XA. Further races take place on the first Wednesdays of June, July and August.

l The Norman Poole Cowm Reservoir Race is on Wednesday at 7pm from the Cock and Magpie Inn, Cock Hall Lane, Whitworth, Rochdale (off the A671 Burnley Road). The 5,000m course takes in two laps of the scenic reservoir.

l The Flower Scar Race is a free to enter race with no prizes. It is on Wednesday at 7.15pm from the Hare and Hounds, Burnley Road, Todmorden and is organised by Todmorden Harriers. Race distance is four miles, and with 1400 feet of ascent included, it is an ‘A’ category event.

Registration is at the Peel Park Pub at Turkey Street, Accrington BB5 6EW. It starts at noon and is a six-mile long fell race which includes 1,100 feet of climb. The following Friday (May 7) at 7pm the runners will be at Pinhaw Moor, a five-mile long multi-terrain race with 700 feet of climb.

The venue is at Red Lion Street, Earby 18 6NN. The series takes in 12 races this season, one more than in 2009, with races over road, fell, country and trail, ending in mid August.

There are two new events for 2010, the Wholan Nook 8.3K Multi-Terrain Race in Burnley, and the Boulsworth Fell Race at Trawden while the Barley Fell Race follows a new route and the Whalley Nab Race is discontinued.
