DJ Campbell may not be able to play for Blackburn Rovers again this season – but Gary Bowyer insists the striker still has a big role to play between now and the end of the campaign.

Campbell has returned to training at Brockhall after Championship rivals Millwall cut short his loan spell following his rearrest as part of a National Crime Agency (NCA) probe into alleged spot-fixing in football.

However the 32-year-old will not be allowed to feature in any of Rovers’ final four games of the season as he remains registered with the Lions for the next three weeks.

Rovers, who are paying the veteran forward’s wages in full, had the option of giving him time off.

But Bowyer was keen to bring Campbell, who has won promotion from the Championship with Blackpool and Birmingham City, back into the first-team fold.

“DJ has come back to us and he’s training with us,” said Bowyer, whose side are four points behind the top six going into tomorrow’s home clash with Yeovil Town.

“He’s a good pro and with his experience he can help around the training ground.

“DJ has never been a problem for us.

“He’s a bubbly character that’s got the experience and know-how of what it’s like at this stage of the season.

“So, although he can’t play for us, his contribution on the training ground can be massive.”

Rovers granted Campbell time off to spend with his family in December after he was one of six men originally arrested by the NCA as part of its investigation into alleged spot-fixing in football.

Having been released on bail until April 8 without charge Campbell went on to play four times for Rovers – in the league wins over Leeds United and Doncaster and the FA Cup ties against Manchester City – before signing for Millwall on loan on January 20 until the end of the season.

He scored two goals in nine appearances for the Lions before they last week took the decision to end his loan early.

Their decision came after the NCA released a statement confirming it had re-arrested the six original suspects based upon new evidence along with a further seven footballers aged between 18 and 30 who play for clubs based in the north west of England.

A further NCA statement confirmed that the 13 individuals, who were interviewed at police stations across the country, had been bailed until late June.

Campbell signed a two-year contract with Rovers in July after being released from QPR.
