No more buys unless we sell, says Blackburn Rovers boss

Lancashire Telegraph: Rudy Gestede celebrates signing for Blackburn Rovers on a permanent deal Rudy Gestede celebrates signing for Blackburn Rovers on a permanent deal

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer says he has already completed his January transfer business – unless he sells.

Bowyer has already sealed permanent deals for previous on-loan duo Tom Cairney and Rudy Gestede.

But after Venky’s stumped up the cash for the double signing Bowyer – whose side welcome Manchester City to Ewood Park in the FA Cup today (12.45pm) – admits his main priority now is to reduce the club’s wage bill.

He has already sent Jordan Slew on loan to Ross County and released Bruno Ribeiro on a free transfer while Alan Judge is wanted by Brentford on loan.

“We will now be more reactive than proactive,” said Bowyer.

“If anybody was to make bids for our players or people that we feel are surplus to requirements then we might look to bring additions then.

“But it’s all about reducing the debt now.”

Rovers captain Scott Dann is a reported target for new Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis.

Bowyer said: “We’ve not had anything official from Crystal Palace so he carries on playing.

“He played magnificently well against Leeds United and he will be the captain of the team against Manchester City.”

Bowyer revealed last month that he would have to generate his own funds in the January window.

But that did not stop Rovers owners Venky’s from committing to permanent transfers for midfielder Cairney and striker Gestede.

Bowyer said: “It was extremely good of the owners to back us and get both of them into the building full time.”

The signing of 22-year-old Cairney, in particular, has delighted Rovers fans – and their manager shares their excitement.

“Tom has just got better and better from playing regular football,” said Bowyer, who believes the Scotland Under 21 international must now add more goals to his game.

“He’s fitted in straight away, he’s a top lad and a special footballer.

“We didn’t feel we were in a position to allow him to play anywhere else.”

Bowyer also believes the best is yet to come from 25-year-old Gestede, who scored his first goal for the club in the New Year’s Day win at Leeds.

He said: “He showed on Wednesday what he’s capable of.

“Bit by bit he’s showing the fans and hopefully for the rest of the season he’ll have big impact for us.”

Bradley Orr and Josh Morris have returned to Rovers following the end of their respective loan spells at Blackpool and Carlisle United.

Bowyer confirmed he will fly out to India this month for a pre-planned meeting with Venky’s, although a date has yet to be set.

Call palace and Put a deadline on any offer for Dann. The last thing we need is him signing for palace 10mins before the window closes. I was going to praise venkys for their input this week but history tells me to reserve judgement until the transfer window is closed.

I'd keep Scott Dann, he is one, of very few, who has alot of premier league experience! No to mention our captain.

Cloud cuckoo land, folks. If the Premier come calling Rhodes and Dann will be off, and who could blame them? Oh, and ditto the manager and staff no matter how much he says he likes 'Madame Desai'!

Used to respect your opinipns even though they differed from mine Mr E - but your posts now are just mush and petty. Maybe time to stop posting on hete if you cant at least make a half decent comment either for or against the Rovers...

My prediction unfortunately is that no-one will come in for any of our players including JR.

Truth is we are trying to offload mediocre players on big wages and worrying about losing a championship striker - albeit top class - who is already on premiership wages and unproven in any premiership experience. Few clubs will come in for JR with any serious offer that we would consider and thats good news for us at least.

I'd stop worrying about the January transfer business now that we've locked in Cairney and Gestede - both who are proving to make our first team solid and with the return of Henley, giving GB plenty of options to put out against the better teams as proven against City yesterday.

Adding to that, some of these contracts will be coming to an end this season anyway and I can see more than a few let go on free transfers as we just have with Ribero.

stop worrying and start enjoying. Our football right now is something to be proud of again and though the same can be said about the Dingles under the ginger Mourinho, the stupid comments from the usual suspects are predictably because they are rattled to see us go from near destruction last season to two points from the playoff spots and improving each week as we climb under a very sensible and grounded manager that is Bowyer.
