Blackburn Rovers sign Tom Cairney and Rudy Gestede on permanent transfers

Lancashire Telegraph: Tom Cairney Tom Cairney

BLACKBURN Rovers have completed the double signing of loan stars Tom Cairney and Rudy Gestede for undisclosed fees.

In what is a massive boost for Rovers supporters Gestede and, in particular, Cairney have penned permanent deals after their loan spells from Cardiff City and Hull City respectively ran out after yesterday’s excellent 2-1 victory at Leeds United in the Championship.

Cairney set-up both of Rovers’ goals in their first win at Elland Road since April 2003.

It was the classy 22-year-old midfielder’s 24th appearance for Gary Bowyer’s side.

During his initial six-month loan from Hull Cairney scored two goals and established himself as a firm fans’ favourite.

Gestede joined Rovers on an emergency loan from Cardiff in November.

The powerful 25-year-old striker has made six appearances for Rovers and netted his first goal for the club in the victory over Leeds.

Both Gestede and Cairney have signed three-and-a-half year contracts, tying them to the club until the summer of 2017.

It's been a while since I was last excited about a signing at Rovers, but Tom Cairney is the real deal; the best midfielder we've had since Tugay hung up his boots.

Excellent business by GB and just what the fans needed. Now we have to keep hold of Rhodes and try and move a few others on. If we keep hold of Rhodes we may now have a good chance of the play offs providing Gary continues to go for it like he did at Leeds. It was a brave selection and game plan and it paid off. Well done.

Excellent news. Really good to get Cairney done and dusted. I see no idiot Burnley fans spouting the usual rubbish at every story that gets released nowadays. No doubt some of the "I support Rovers but don't go and watch them" brigade will still find negatives in some way.

I agree, keeping Rhodes is crucial now, from what I have seen so far of Gestede he looks like the perfect foil for Rhodes, big, strong and quick.

It's great to see so many positive posts on a Rovers thread, it's been a long hard few years under Venky's, perhaps this is when the tide starts to turn.

No I'm not. Isn't it all exciting? Who will stop us now? Venkys shift out about 30-40 million quids worth of talent out and bring in Rhodes, and a promising mid-fielder who can't get in Hull City's first team and a striker that is surplus at Cardiff City, and look at you all on here! You really couldn't make it up! Get real people They haven't bought Ronaldinho you know! You really are pathetic!

And who are Burnley going to be buying? They are skint, have just lost £8 million and couldn't even afford to make any loan signings to bolster their squad. What you would give to spend money signing proven Championship quality in January rather than relying on freebies from the lower leagues.

No shame in signing players who are surplus to requirements at Premier League clubs!

By the way, how's the impending financial catastrophe at Ewood Park coming along? Signing two players for cash on 3.5 year deals doesn't really look to me like Armageddon is on the horizon.

Brilliant Signings.

Whilst on the pitch Rovers have been inconsistent, we are doing okay and set up nicely for the 2nd half of the season.

Off the pitch though, talk about getting the house in order! GB is making massive strides shipping out deadwood and injecting youth with experience.

I have massive confidence in the job he is doing and if we get play offs this season then that for me is beyond expectations given the mess. Next season though we would be in a much better position to get promotion.

I'll take it this year though hey ;)

What a cracking start to the New Year, a win away at Leeds then s cracking double signing of players who will really add value to the squad. just need Evans back and Dunny giving us an hour a game and midfield is looking impressive. Hope the rest of the month carrys on as positive. Great to see the dingles investing on the pitch, 3 sacks of grass seed have been delivered at the Turd.

Well. Wee do you start? I'll keep it short. Over the years when we have played big teams in the cup, City, Liverpool etc (remember the ball boy incident with Liverpool and Jimmy Hill (0-1) in last minute?) we play well and get the odd goal. I predict the same on Saturday. I shall watch closely from my armchair and hope Rovers aren't too embarrassed. However, it will remind all the Venky lovers just how far they have brought our club - if you see what I mean.

Great news, especially the signing of Cairney.

After the Birmingham game I thought our season was over, but with these signings and the Leeds win, maybe we still have a chance of making the playoffs.

Anyway all the best in 2014 for all Rovers fans.

Get out or yer time machine Moron, it's not 1995 it's 2014 and you're now a mid table embarrassing football club who has stooped low enough to play players who are on bail for cheating during matches, you're facing a transfer embargo and financial ruin. No wonder you're signing any old premiership reject, signing players will be nothing but a dream for you after next season.

Regardless of how far off the play offs you are you're still 13 points behind Burnley. Do the maths dumbass.

Cracking news. When we get Evans and Dunny back, who knows what might be achieved, and NO, I don't mean automatic promotion!

I don't see Rhodes going in this window, quality finisher he most certainly is, there are other areas of his game he's still working on before the bigger clubs will commit, I reckon.

Signing these two goes against what we have seen previously from Venkys, perhaps there may be a plan after all. Yes, there are issues over FFP which may come back and bite us, but it won't just be BRFC! I can see FFP being challenged in the courts, restraint of trade perhaps.

Historically, football clubs have never been run like a proper business, making profit, who ever heard of such a thing for the vast majority?

Whatever..... A great start to the New Year!

So, let's say we get £12m in for Rhodes (ie monster offer) and then pay back what we owe Huddersfield - let's say about half, so 4 million, which means about 8m left over, of which £5m would surely tempt the hard up Burnley board, for a player who has only 18 months left on his contract. Not to mention that Ings would surely want out, given the temptation of at least doubling his wages.

Maybe we could also pick up Trippier with the change.

Not sure what has changed with Cairney, you already had him. The other guy has obviously been bought to replace Rhodes.
When I want a response from a Burnley inbred I will ask for it. Until then crawl back under the sister, sorry, stone you came from and enjoy the free fall you are about to witness over the next 3 months.

You'd better hope that we don't sell Rhodes, as the last thing you want is a bigger club with ready cash on the lookout for a new striker and with a pledge to double his wages! I'll give you a clue, I'm not talking about Sam Vokes.
Another thicker than whale sh1t no dad who's tenting up his shell suit in error.

And just where do you think the money you'd get for him would be going? Shall I tell you ?? Straight in the coffers at Huddersfield Town that's where.

You still owe them somewhere in the region of 5 million plus a 20% sell on clause. So you might be able to sign another league 1 reject with what's left but that's about it.

BRFC FANS - Financially deluded since Jack's magic wallet stopped sh1tting money.

Sounds like a feasible plan b if Rhodes gets sold. Both would jump at the chance of playing for such a massive club

We are getting REAL. We are Rovers supporters who go and support and watch our team. If you did that you would know that Cairney is a brilliant signing. So its you that needs to get real and stop spouting rubbish because like it or not things are slowly improving. COYB!!!

You seem to get a lot if stick from your "fellow" fans on here. I honestly think you are just telling it how it is. If these fools want to get a communal semi on over a few half bit signings then let them crack on and start dishing out the reach arounds to each other.

Don't let them wear you down.
For Christ sake Knackersley (and kudos to Angry for that name) as if your year wasn't 5hite enough already, I almost feel sorry for you.

2014, two days in and Rovers have won, and bought a couple of players and now you have a dingle joining your gang.

Oh dear, Whatever next, you and your little mate Dave going to grow a pair and watch Rovers on Saturday ? If you don't have the bottle It's on telly so you can pretend you support Rovers and nobody will see you.

Enjoy.
The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist hopes it will change. The realist adjusts the sails. You are good for nothing else but walking the plank.

It's the FA Cup, when was the last time we won it? I bet even Ekersley wasn't even playing playing.

We are playing the best, most expensive team in the UK at present at home in the third round of the FA Cup, a competition we rarely get past the third round in.

It's a no lose situation, win lose or draw, I personally am looking forward to a potentially great cup game and I certainly won't be sitting in my armchair mumbling "Bah Humbug".

You need to get your head out of your arse.

It's a no lose situation, win lose or draw, I personally am looking forward to a potentially great cup game and I certainly won't be sitting in my armchair mumbling "Bah Humbug".

You need to get your head out of your arse.
Here here!!! got my ticket, will be good practice and experience for some of the young lads.
Don't think we will win but I also don't think we will embarrass ourselves either.
Come on you blues!!

You really are pathetic![/p]
You seem to get a lot if stick from your "fellow" fans on here. If you don't have the bottle It's on telly so you can pretend you support Rovers and nobody will see you. Enjoy.[/p]
I never ever thought I'd say this after all the **** ups the Venkys have had in the last two plus years but getting these two signed up so quickly they deserve a well done, they have still a long way to go but it's a start.
I will repeat myself but things are happening down at Ewood, young players being signed up in long term contracts, a young manager willing to put his faith in youth, get rid of a bit more Dead Wood and we could become a "Normal" club again.
If the owners are prepared to pay the inevitable end of season fines things are looking rosy.
Burnley will never go up automatically so we WILL play them in the play offs and that will be the greatest ending to a season you could ask for, bring them on!!

The jealousy oozing out of Dingleland is truly amazing. One after another they spout their usual drivel. You are a laughing stock of a football club, you bought the PL, you are going down. Burnley are top dogs in East Lancs etc etc. In the mean time the Rovers are slowly coming out of their three years of hell. They are building a team capable of reaching the play offs and added bonus the possibility of beating Burnley in the final. Now that would be the icing on the cake.
The manager has been given a chance at last to build his own young team. Whilst I will never forgive the Venky's for what they did to the club and hope they are gone soon, they do seem to be learning some lessons and are getting their house in order. Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Wow! What am I saying the New Year must be having a strange affect on me.
Anyway happy new year to all the readers and may this year see a change for the better.

Good news. Shift out the remaining Kean and Shabby dross, get Robinson back, keep Dunny ticking over and play 4-3-3 at home and things might just be looking up. Long way to go before Venkys make their total fubar right though.

Hmm pot calling kettle black. Youve got your head stitched to your bum so good for nothing i think
Out with the lot of them
English please Dave...

On another note, what a good couple of signings, let a bit of the riff raff go and I think we are fine now with the team we have, I'm not bothered if we don't make another signing this January, the team we have is good enough and now need to start to get regular play, we have enough competition for places imo

Not necessarily? I mean, an undisclosed fee means that it could be next to nothing? Aside of that, how many games you been to recently? He has been showing some really good form in the precious few minutes he has been getting in games.. Give him a decent run of a game and he gets a goal.. Seems quite eventful to me...
