Telegraph manager poll: Your verdict on who should take over at Blackburn Rovers

Ian Holloway is your first choice to take over as Rovers manager Ian Holloway is your first choice to take over as Rovers manager

BLACKBURN Rovers supporters have sent an emphatic message to owners Venky’s in their search for a new manager with vastly experienced bosses topping the Lancashire Telegraph readers’ poll.

More than 700 votes were received in the space of two and a half days on who the club should target to succeed Steve Kean in the Ewood Park hot seat, with the results showing a strong call for a more established figure to guide Rovers back into the Premier League.

Blackpool’s charismatic boss Ian Holloway led the way with more than 20 per cent of the vote, with former Wolves man Mick McCarthy a close second with 17.5 per cent.

Former Spurs chief Harry Redknapp (6.8%), Real Madrid’s old boss Bernd Schuster (5.6%), ex-Charlton and West Ham number one Alan Curbishley (5.3%), Huddersfield’s ex-Rover Simon Grayson (4.9%) and Spaniard Rafa Benitez (4.2%) also featured in the top 10.

A lack of experience appears to have worked against Rovers’ Premier League winning skipper and the club’s apparent initial favourite, with the Tottenham technical director Tim Sherwood just receiving 1.4 per cent of the vote.

Former Manchester United ace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer received strong support towards the end of the poll, after it was reported he would be interested in the role, with a late surge taking him to joint fourth in the vote with 5.6%.

The 39-year-old is on the verge of taking Norwegian outfit Molde to their second successive title, having previously managed Manchester United reserves for three seasons.

Former Ewood darling Alan Shearer was one of the few to buck the ‘experience’ trend. He proved the most popular ‘legend’ to return as manager with 4.9% of the vote, while 3.5% felt caretaker boss Eric Black should be handed the reins.

With Rovers yet to start the process to find a new manager in earnest, the Lancashire Telegraph poll provides just an early snapshot of what supporters are feeling, with a wide range of names suggested.

New names are coming into contention all the time but the initial feeling among Rovers supporters appears to be that a wily old campaigner should be given the top job, with the club having suffered under managerial novice Kean over the past two years.

YOUR VERDICT

1 - Ian Holloway: 20.8% (148 votes)

2 - Mick McCarthy: 17.5% (125 votes)

I would be happy with that top 10 apart from;
Yo-yo McCarthy
Curbishley
Black
Redknapp would come.
For me, it would be Holloway or Ole.

Ok Steve. We all believe you if you say you've changed. Only because you've never lied in the past and been so honest with all of us. Plane? What plane?

My 1st choice would be be Benitez. High profile and straight out of the top draw. Still lives pretty local and might just be ready for a new challenge.

The smart money this morning is going on Ole Gunnar taking over by Monday.....you can still get 6/5 on him but those are the shortest odds on anyone so far and if this carries on through the day they may stop taking bets..

Black is still second fav with Tim Sherwood slipping out to third. You can still get Holloway at 33-1 (so he is not coming) and Benitez is way out at 40-1 surprisingly.

So get your money on the Ole the former Red while you can....he looks tied-on for it now.

Morning Mr French.

OGS would be my choice pick of the bunch although B Scuhner is a very interesting prospect.

Holloway I would say is not a contender ?

Young, energetic and ambitious with a great track record in the game surely must give him the edge over say a Sherwood ?

Hi Mr W.....yes it looks like OGS is the choice of the club and most of the fans on here also. Like you said he is young, energetic and ambitious and done just about everything on the field and is now looking to do the same off it. The Rovers would be the perfect move for him for his career advancement and to get him into the English game and he should be perfect for us. He is well respected and known globally in the football world....sounds like a match made in heaven! Or in Pune!

When were we asked to pitch a vote? I cannot recall seeing the poll.

Glen Hoddle is the best of that bunch an intelligent tactician who quietly gets on with it.
Harry Redknapp also great man manager similar to Terry Venables not frightened to leave people out but good in the transfer market but can we afford him and Joe Jordan?
Holloway is a bit erratic at times but is always interesting so yes he will be good.

No to McCarthy he stood there match after match watching Wolves lose and did not have a clue how to remedy it bit like Black last night not a great tactician but a nice guy always honest but not up to the job,

Keane has also failed to deliver and should not be considered as he has an arrogant abrasive nature which we cannot afford at Ewood.

All the ex players -big no as none have broke any pots yet.

Mark Hughes- Why would he leave a top club to rejoin us? Pity he was a great boss.

Solsjar - He may be the man we should go for but would he come here? Young and hungry with an excellent track record.

For me the over-riding priority is to sort out the management first. Get rid of the Mickey Mouse lot who are masquerading as management at the moment and do EVERYTHING possible to bring back John Williams and Tom Finn – with total authority. Then the club would be able to rebuild with confidence and without the meddling of people who haven’t a clue.

If that is not done, it really doesn’t matter which manager is brought in. Either he would be just another puppet – or he would pack his bags as soon as Mickey and his friends started poking their noses in. Either way they would be back where they started.

Bringing in players behind the manager’s back is madness.

Since it is going to be Mme Desai who decides, forget logic and go for looks. We know that she likes bald headed Scotsmen. So, perhaps Kenny could shave his head, Holloway grow a Scottish accent or OGS do both. In reality though, she could go for anyone, however unsuitable, as none of the fan's choices will mean anything to her. We wait, therefore, upon the caprice of the Indian matriarch. That is my worry.

Spoke to a Wolves fan, said McCarthy was terrible, various reasons. He said they have taken 28 million pounds from sales, spent 3 million. The parachute payment already in the back pocket. What would have happened at Rovers if Venkys had done that!

Surprised not more votes for Hill and Grayson.

Whoever they employ will be a risk, don't want another coach turned manager.

Been watching Rovers long enough to know that whoever is appointed will need TIME and PATIENCE from the Fans.

No one who is appointed will have been the first choice of everyone but we have got to learn to trust that they will get it right (one cant change the past but must look forward with optimism)

Rightly the fans have been carping for so long many have forgotten the good days at Ewood but they can return just dont expect an instant run of victories.

I would like to see Mick McCarthy get the job, he has the right credentials and was doing a lot better with a bad wolves team than his successor did.
OGS would be a good choice also, he has done well in Norway and now is right time to step up to this level. a good relationship with United is no harm either.
The calls for Keith Hill are worrying me, his win percentage of 28% with Barnsley doesn't say to me he has the ability to get us promoted.
SImon Grayson would be a great shout also. he has done well everywhere he has gone.
Roy Keane would a high profile name and would bring some good discipline and direction to the club

I know 2 games are not enough to judge Black on but it goes beyond that. He’s been employed by BRFC since January and I think that was long enough to form an opinion of what was needed to make Rovers a better team. Most of us agree we should play two up front almost every home game, we all know our defence needed strengthening, plus we need at least one attacking midfielder and the substitutions...well
!

So after 9 months Black never felt strong enough to have a quiet word with Gollum (sorry I just refuse to use his name) or he agreed with everything that was happening.

So either way that’s a no, no from me. He may, one day, make a fantastic manager but his actions (or lack of) prove to me he is not the man we need right now.

Pay Redknapp £1M for the next 9 months add a £2M bonus if he gets us promoted. In the meantime we can look for someone who can take us further once this has been achieved.

Let’s face it Redknapp won't need to move home because he know the job is only till next summer and if he doesn’t get us promoted then we are in the brown stuff for a long time, so £3M is small price to pay.

I agree about Black, he's been right next to Kean all along and Kean appointed him and trusted him, so any influence he had wasn't very good, was it?

I can only see Harry taking the job if he was promised money to spend. He can wheel and deal but I can't see him trading any of the squad and getting great players in exchange. And if he is promised money he will only leave Rovers in debt and with more financial problems that they already have, imho. He has a track record of leaving clubs in the lurch. Spurs managed to get rid before got the chance.

Who is really like to come to blackburn - Give the list of Managers who applied and wish list from Shabby too. Mick McCarthy once told he dosen't like to coach in Championship teams. then why he stay in the list. so it is a fantasy list. and blackpool manager is doing good with the club, in this mid season, i don't think so he will jump just for money and fame.

All the above names are not applied, they all are waitng near to there telephone with there BIG EGO. none of the listed ex-managers strongly come out to help - for last two matchs.

We need one experianced BOSS who can manage , control , build players and support FANS on the ground, not in the board room.

There is surely a big lobby running around the city and in venky's head also. make sure venky will fullfill the demand with the fans. But Fans always choose the BIG NAMES , but they will fail in this championship hardwork part. we don't need fashion show , we need to win the game.

Black however clearly has some dignity and self pride and I'm sure if he thought he wasn't upto the job would hold his hands up and say so. Plus, he wouldn't want to go through the hell that lying, in denial, truth manipulating, rhino skinned, propaganda king of spin Kean went through.

Good post. I agree with every line.

It all boils down to do you risk an unproven manager or go for an experienced one, or to put it another way do you want results instantly or wait till the new manager gets his type of players in the transfer window, which could mean no promotion this season and that would be risky.

Come to think of it, why is Shaw at the Rovers and is Agnew still there (or even alive)? if she liked Kean and could understand his Scottish accent, then obviously Hendry is going to get the job.

No for me it went something like this;
"I need to warn/advise you (Walker trust) that I cannot be sure that these would be good owners for BRF., Yes, I know the fit and proper test has been passed, but basically that test is just horse shoite". "I agree I don't own the club as you do, but I feel I have a responsibility to Jacks memory and the common supporter".
"OK so what you're saying is, you really don't care owt for the club, as Jack did, and you want the readies, no matter who's paying".
"Ok if you say so, I will sit in and see how it goes and if and when things don't seem quite right, I will be looking to offer my services elsewhere as I would not want to be part of anything destructive to BRFC".

Having ambition and being a 'Pundit" are not really qualifications to be a football manager. We have one pundit in Shebby (from that well known football nation, Malaysia) and what has he done so far? Can we have a 'proper' manager with experience and authority - assuming anyone down at Ewood and over in India knows what a proper manager looks like; Shaw never did at PNE, and Mrs. D 's track record is 0 -1. Given our history with BFS and SK, I don't think a proper, well known manager will come within a 100 miles of the club. You can see it coming - Black & Hendry - "the dream team", because they are in place (and cheap). I hope I am proved wrong.

It is a funny article though.

It looks as though we are not alone when it comes to having barn-pot owners.

Have you noticed how the journos have forgotten all about the "dignity" cr@p and are starting to have a bit of a go at Kean? And they're really laying in to Venkys. Some have even dared to suggest Kean's appointment may have been "influenced" by something other than his suitability for the job. They sound like they are testing the water; just seeing what they can get away with before someone has a quiet word.

We told you but you wouldn't believe us would you? Feel free to print a double page apology to all the Rovers' fans you slated last year.

I hope they do actually know something definite but just haven't been able to prove it yet. Hopefully it will all come out in the wash.

Manager? Of those mentioned, I'd say OGS sounds the most interesting. The rest? They're mainly high risk, soiled goods or flights of fancy. Or just not good enough, plain and simple.

Like the guy in the Telegraph says, Venkys would get more money selling tickets for the interview with Roy Keane than they would on a Saturday. I'd have one for sure.
