PLEASINGTON’S Catherine Roberts made it third time lucky after finally winning the Lancashire Ladies Championships in a marathon final at Manchester Golf Club.

The 26-year-old former Northern Women’s champion entered the tournament having been runner-up twice in the previous four years.

But Roberts finally got her hands on the trophy after defeating home player Sophie Powell on the 20th hole this afternoon.

Ranked sixth for the matchplay stage of the competition, the county player booked her final place after beating St Annes golfer Amelia Taylor one up in this morning’s semi-finals.

In the other semi-final, Pleasington’s Nikki Foster was beaten 2&1 by Powell.

Roberts, who works at Hart Common Golf Club near Westhoughton, was the beaten finallist at home club Pleasington in 2010 when coming up short against Bethany Garton of Royal Lytham & St Annes.

She was also defeated by recently crowned English champion Kelly Tidy in the 2008 final at Worsley.

Pleasington’s Brogan Townend achieved the best gross score at this year’s championships, after recording rounds of 69 and 72, seven shots ahead of second-placed Garton.

The Challenge plate was won by Donna Barnes of Manchester GC who beat Hollie Muse (West Lancs GC) 2&1.
