JON Fielding hailed Pieter Malan as immense after the Ramsbottom professional smashed his way to what is understood to be a world record Twenty20 score against Rawtenstall.

The South African batsman bashed his way to an astonishing 165 not out in the Moorhouse’s Lancashire League T20 clash with Rawtenstall - and Fielding could scarcely believe what he was seeing.

“It was astonishing, immense - unbelievable, “ said Fielding. “The Rawtenstall bowlers had no margin for error. Anything that was short or wide was just dispatched into the car park.

“I have never seen anything like it.

“You get these guys and you only realise how good they are when you bowl at them. There is a quarter-inch square that you have to hit - and if you deviate they take you apart.”

The highest score in Twenty20 cricket recorded by Wisden is 158 not out by New Zealander Brendan McCullum in the Indian Premier League in 2007, while second in their list is Read’s Mohammed Jamal, who made 157 not out in the Ribblesdale League T20 last season.
