BIG hitting Steve Elwood admitted he loved every minute of a brutal innings on Saturday after smashing a sensational century off just 48 balls.

The destructive batsman went on the attack from the off as he opened for Cherry Tree seconds against Edenfield – and when he was first man out for 109 in the 12th over his side’s score was 118...and that included two extras.

“Sometimes you just come off,” laughed Elwood, who is Cherry Tree club steward. “I rode my luck a bit and to be honest I could have been caught out third ball and I was dropped in the 80s and also chipped a few just over fielders.

“But my luck was in and the shots came off and I thought I’d do the lottery on Saturday night – but I didn’t win that so I wasn’t all that lucky.”

Elwood opened the innings with Andrew Robinson and went straight on the attack against an Edenfield side that included the experienced Bill Slinger.

But that did not deter Elwood and after six overs Cherry were 68-0 – and Elwood had 60 of those and after coasting past his ton in just 48 balls, he finally fell for 109 when he was bowled by Slinger.

In total he faced just 53 balls and smashed seven fours and 10 sixes on a day when Greg Jones and Paul Turner both made tons for the first team.

“It was a great day for Cherry’s batsmen,” added Elwood. “I really enjoyed my knock and it was good to bat with Andy.

“He just stood there and told me to carry on hitting it.

“That’s just the way I play.”

After the departure of Elwood, Cherry’s run rate slowed somewhat as they posted 228-8 before skipper Rob Ince claimed four wickets as Edenfield were bowled out for 199.
