LAURA Massaro begins her British Open campaign today as the high profile tournament returns after a three-year absence.

The Allam British Open, widely regarded as the Wimbledon of squash, has attracted the best players from across the globe – including world number one Nicol David.

Massaro, 28, from Chorley, is scheduled to meet the Malaysian superstar in the semi finals but is undaunted by the task, having beaten her twice last year.

But whatever happens, Massaro is glad to see the return of the London event.

“I’m really excited about the British Open being back on the calendar,” said Massaro, who lives in Hoghton. “It’s such a huge event with so many great names on the trophy and I’m looking forward to competing for the title.

“I feel my strengths are in being an all-round solid player. I’m feeling fit and strong and so I’m hoping I can play to my potential.”

The reigning British champion, and current world player of the year, plays a qualifier in her first round clash at the O2 Arena this evening.

And should Massaro progress to the last four, she will be hoping history can repeat itself in a potential semi final showdown with David, a four-time winner of the British Open.

“Obviously, Nicol is strong favourite with her accuracy and speed,” added Massaro. “She’s always tough to beat but with my recent record against her, I’m hoping to play well and see where that leads.”
