DEFENDING champions Ribblesdale Wanderers proved they have no intention of losing their grip on the Ramsbottom Cup without a fight as they racked up the day’s highest score in the first round yesterday.

Ian Britcliffe’s men, who lifted the silverware when beating Read at the Arbories last July, returned to the scene of their triumph to face Padiham.

And after posting a mammoth 281-6, they were always in the box seat to claim the win, which they did by 87 runs as Padiham fell short despite a half-century from skipper John Bushell.

Read’s cup journey ended at the first hurdle as their much-changed side was beaten by in-form Settle at Marshfield, while Richard Palmer’s Whalley came through an enthralling battle with Earby.

They won by just eight runs at Station Road to book their spot in the second round with Palmer picking up crucial wickets at the end.

Oswaldtwistle Immanuel pulled off a tremendous win over Great Harwood at New Lane and they roared to a nine-wicket success.

Harwood's Amar Ullah made 50 as they were bowled out for 157 with four wickets for Andrew Metcalf.

And then Immanuel recovered from the early loss of Oliver Jones to storm home with pro Chris Cooke-Martin making 88 not out and Oliver Clare chipping in with an unbeaten 44.

Cherry Tree performed well with the bat to rack up 212-3 in their game at Baxenden – but they were beaten by three wickets as Andy Caunce’s men dug deep to get over the line.

Ribblesdale League leaders Barnoldswick flexed their muscles to beat Salesbury at Ribchester Road.

Matt Nutter’s Barlick coasted home after knocking the Red Caps over for just 65.
