KIERAN Trippier admitted he was “speechless” at pipping Jay Rodriguez to the supporters’ player of the year prize at Burnley’s presentation night. But runner-up Rodriguez insists the accolade was well deserved.

It was a two-horse race for the major prizes on the night, with Golden Boot winner Rodriguez getting the players’ player of the year vote, days after being named in the PFA Championship team of the year.

But Trippier felt every player deserved credit for the contributions to a transitional season.

“I thought Jay was going to get it. He’s done brilliant this year and that shows with his goals record. I’m delighted to get it but Jay deserves credit.

“But it’s a team game and I think every single player in that team deserved an award,” said the 21-year-old.

“I’m absolutely delighted. I left Manchester City to come and play football and I came to Burnley and I’ve played 50 games this season.

“I’m happy with my own performance but I couldn’t have done it without the lads behind me. Duffo (Michael Duff) has helped me a lot in my Burnley career so far.”

Meanwhile, Rodriguez described it as an “honour” to get his team-mates’ backing.

“It means a lot to me that the lads have chosen me,” he said.

“Tripps has been amazing all year. He’s a great footballer but not only that he’s a great lad around the training ground and we’re good friends.

“I’m really happy he got the official player of the year award because he deserves it.

“To me he deserved a clean sweep because he has been class all year.”
