ANYONE connected with Blackburn Rovers who was not embarrassed by their Sunday afternoon showing needs to get real. It was truly shambolic.

The few hundred Rovers fans who made the journey to White Hart Lane just to see their side gift Spurs one of the easiest ever Premier League wins deserve at least an apology.

It doesn’t seem as though they are going to get it though.

No one has any right to expect a place in the Premier League. If Rovers go down, it will be because they have not been good enough. The table does not lie.

Rovers fans do have a right to expect to see their side go down fighting though and, for too long now, the fires inexplicably seem to have gone out.

The Ewood faithful don’t want to hear their manager talking about the supposed positives of the display. They want him to hold his hands up, admit the tactics were horribly wrong and to tell his squad a few home truths.

Of course there is a time for positivity but there is also a time for honesty and you can’t blame Rovers fans for feeling they just aren’t getting that at the moment.

I received a text from a Rovers fan on Sunday night simply stating he was embarrassed by the way his side were saying goodbye to the Premier League – and I think that sums it up. Look at Wigan, look at Bolton and even QPR. Whichever of these sides eventually do go down, none of their fans can complain about them not giving it all when it came to crunch time.

They may not be good enough at the end of the day and there is little you can do about that. But at least they all gave it a go.

The sad facts are Rovers were good enough. The squad that was in place after the summer transfer window should have been looking forward. That was until a ridiculous culling of so many key figures.

The strange thing is Rovers players have shown they possess fight this season. They have rolled up their sleeves and they have threatened to drag the club out of the mire.

Perhaps then the on field debacle of the last few weeks is more a sign of a lack of belief in what they are being asked to do. You get the feeling they have just grown tired of trying to paper over the cracks.

I hope they prove me wrong. I hope they beat Wigan and Chelsea, stay in the Premier League and tell us all ‘I told you so’.

All I know is at the moment, we are not seeing performances from a team that believes in itself or in what it is being asked to do.

Rovers have enjoyed a golden era but I don’t think any of us could have believed the manner in which the dream was to come crashing down.
