ACCRINGTON Stanley midfielder Will Hatfield says he is happy to embrace the ‘super sub’ tag after again coming off the bench to score a crucial goal at the weekend.
Hatfield netted the winner in Saturday’s 2-1 home victory against AFC Wimbledon, having previously rescued late draws against Port Vale and Bradford City.
The 20-year-old rejoined Stanley until the end of the season in February and, although he is keen to gain a place in the starting line-up in the future, he has enjoyed his new-found role.
Reds boss Paul Cook has confirmed that he intends to offer Hatfield a new deal for next term and the midfielder has welcomed that news.
“That’s what I’m hoping for, security, that’s what I’ve wanted for a while,” said Hatfield, who was released by Leeds in January before a brief spell at Halifax.
“There’s a lot of banter in the changing room about the super sub thing. After scoring again this reputation is going to go on for a bit longer now, but I’ll take the tag!
“Obviously I’d love to be starting, there’s not many games left in the season now so hopefully I can get a bit of a run of starts before the end of the season.
“But that’s up to the gaffer. If I keep on coming in with 15 or 20 minutes to go and scoring every time I’m more than happy!”
