ACCRINGTON Stanley defender Danny Coid believes a focus on results rather than contracts has helped the Reds get over a tricky start to life under Paul Cook.
Luke Joyce and Dean Winnard – set for an ankle operation next week – are currently the only members of the Stanley squad who have guaranteed contracts for next season.
Coid admits many players felt apprehensive about their futures at the Crown Ground when John Coleman departed for Rochdale.
But Cook quickly tried to reassure the squad that he would not be making snap judgements, trying to put the players at ease. Stanley are unbeaten in five games after losing Cook’s first three matches in charge.
“When the gaffer first came in people were on their toes a little bit and were worrying too much about what’s going to happen if I have a bad game, does that mean I’m not going to be here next year?” said former Blackpool defender Coid.
“But the lads are really settled now.
“I’ve been in this situation quite a few times and contracts do come into your mind. If you make a mistake on the pitch you think ,’Oh no, is that going to affect me? Can I get out of it, can I correct my mistake? I had a bad game today, does that mean he doesn’t like me now?’.
“But I think the lads have just got to worry about results, that will help everyone.”
