BLACKO Primary School have been crowned Lancashire small school sportshall athletics champions.

The Pendle school held off the challenge of St John and St Michael to take the title.

There were just four points seperating the two schools, Blacko finishing with a total of 328 points while their Rossendale rivals finished with 324 points.

While it was a fine all-round display by Blacko, the performance of the girls team went some way to the school’s overall victory.

For the girls won four events – the standing triple jump, vertical jump, soft javelin and the one lap relay. – on the way to winning the girls event.

They also finished second in the speed bounce and the obstacle relay.

In contast, the boys team had to settle for joint third place.

They took runners-up spot in the soft javelin and were third in the vertical jump, obstacle relay and one lap relay. Oakhill from Ribble Valley won the boys with St John and St Michael runners-up in both sections.

Other local schools taking part were Bretherton Endowed from Chorley who were fifth, Burnley’s St Joseph’s who were sixth with Belmont Primary School from Blackburn with Darwen in ninth place.
