MIKEY Worswick has won another British kickboxing title after a devastating display of power and skill.

The 21-year-old stopped Londoner Mohammed Quronfleh in the fifth round of their ICO British middleweight contest in Kidder-minster.

Worswick, from Accrington has now won nine major titles including two British, two English and a Commonwealth crown.

He has also won a North West boxing title.

Now the former Rhyddings High School pupil has set his sights on a shot at the European title – but not until he adds another British belt to his collection.

“Mikey was just too good for his opponent,” said coach Jason Curtis, fresh from his own success after winning the vacant European Boxing Federation British middleweight title the previous weekend. “Mikey lives and breaths kick boxing and he thoroughly deserves every success he gets because he works so hard.”

Having already won the ISK British title, Worswick, who fights out of Kokoro Boxing in Clitheroe, dominated his contest against Quronfleh who was short-listed for fighter of the year in 2010.

He put him down in the fourth and early in the next round with some crunching body shots before stopping him with a straight backhand in the fifth of the 10 round contest.

It took his record to 17 wins and one disputed losss on points.

Worswick, who works at Ultraframe in Clitheroe, is due to fight for the British light middleweight title early in April before going for the European crown at the end of the same month.

“We’ve been chasing the European title for some time and now Mikey will get his chance,” added Curtis. “But he has the opportunity to go for the British lightweight title first. So he’ll lose a few pounds for the before attempting to win the European title.”

Worswick has worked with Curtis since he was 13-years-old and made history when he was given special permission by the kick boxing governing body to turn professional when he was just 17.
