STEVE Kean wants former Barcelona and Chelsea ace Bolo Zenden to join Blackburn Rovers’ Premier League survival scrap – but any deal is still far from certain.

The former Dutch international was at Brockhall on Tuesday, where he impressed Rovers' coaching staff, with boss Kean in favour of handing him a short term deal until the end of the season.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands owners Venky’s are yet to give the green light to the signing, with negotiations still needed before any potential deal is sorted.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since leaving Sunderland at the end of last season but is now hoping he has done enough to earn a short term deal at Ewood Park.

Zenden is understood to have demonstrated good levels of fitness, and is now hopeful he will get the chance to play a part in the club’s Premier League relegation scrap.

No final decision has been made on the player’s future but it is understood Kean and his coaching staff are keen to bring Zenden in until the end of the season.

Kean is now mulling over his next move with owners Venky's still needing to be convinced, with an answer expected in the next few days.

Sources close to the player have revealed he would be very keen on signing for Rovers until the end of the campaign and is confident he can play a role in the club’s season finale.

Kean’s assistant Eric Black knows Zenden well, having worked with him over the last couple of seasons at Sunderland, with Rovers confident he could regain the necessary match fitness.

Zenden’s capture would offer manager Kean another option in midfield, with summer signing Simon Vukcevic and Spanish play maker Ruben Rochina seemingly out of favour at Rovers.

His experience could also prove invaluable, with the recent departures of Ryan Nelsen, Keith Andrews, Jason Roberts and Chris Samba leaving Rovers largely reliant on youth.

The Dutch winger thought he had secured a contract at Scottish giants Celtic earlier this season but, having featured in a behind closed doors friendly, he was snubbed by the Parkhead outfit.

He has also previously held talks with Championship outfit Doncaster Rovers but, as they collapsed due to financial reasons, he has been left to continue his search for a club.

Zenden was offered a contract extension at Sunderland at the end of last season but he opted to turn the opportunity down in pursuit of a new challenge.

He rose to prominence at PSV Eindhoven before moving to Barcelona, Chelsea, Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Marseille and Sunderland.
