Best moment of 2011

Chris McCann’s comeback. It came as a shock to the midfielder to start in his comeback game, eight months after having reconstructive knee ligament surgery. But the Dubliner was buzzing on adrenaline against Derby County, and capped a memorable afternoon with a stunning goal to complete a 4-2 win.

Worst moment of 2011

Martin Paterson’s double injury nightmare. Just when the striker thought he had put a long-term thigh problem behind him, he suffered a recurrence in only his second comeback game from the bench, and was ruled out for the rest of the season. The 24-year-old started the 2011/12 campaign, only to break down again on the opening day against Watford. But after four months on the sidelines is determined to end the year on a high, with a goal on Boxing Day.

Player of 2011

Jay Rodriguez. What a year it has been for the Burnley-born striker. After establishing himself in the side his progress was recognised with an England Under 21 cap in February. The Clarets turned down big offers for last season's joint top scorer in the summer and they are braced to fend off more suitors when the transfer window opens as he tops their current goal charts with 12 going into the final game of a calendar in which he has 23 goals.

Young Player of 2011

Kieran Trippier. The right back had big shoes to fill when he arrived on a season-long loan from Manchester City. Trippier came with a reputation of being a free kick specialist and the winner at Brighton was proof he is just as dangerous in open play, and he has developed an excellent understanding with Ross Wallace down the right.

Goal of the Year

Jack Cork v Preston away. Moved the ball out to Wade Elliott, who crossed from the right, and Cork finished the move he started with a diving header in front of the delighted travelling fans.
