RUGBY players have come up with a novel way of ‘skinning’ the opposition.

But the naked ambition of team-mates at Pendle Phoenix RUFC might not be the way to survive the rucks and mauls of the North Lancashire 2 league.

Flankers, locks, tight-heads and props have stripped down for a ‘Full Monty’ style fundraising calendar.

But quite what Martin Johnson would have made of the Phoenix scrumdown, which adorns the cover of the 2012 effort, can only be imagined.

The risque rundown was devised by Phoenix women’s secretary Lindsay Moss in aid of their new clubhouse appeal.

And with one of the Nelson-based club’s founders, Jim Peverley, behind the lens, and some bizarre backdrops, the rugger mates couldn’t have tried harder.

Ben Peverley, a second rower in the first XV, said: “There were some who were more willing than others but everyone entered into it with the right spirit.”

Several of the players also gave a live rendition of their starring calendar roles, taking part in a fundraiser at The Crown Hotel, in Colne, which ended with just posing pouches sparing their blushes.

Currently Phoenix players have to change at the nearby Swinden playing fields and walk over to their home ground, Hodge House, before games.

The money raised as part of the appeal can be match-funded by the Rugby Football Union, to provide suitable changing facilities. Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, the side’s honorary vice-president, is helping to raise awareness of the calendar and clubhouse appeal.

The calendars can be obtained from Ben, by calling 07978 992080, on Sunday mornings at Hodge House, or from The Crown.
