JUNIOR Hoilett’s contract talks have reached a “standstill” as a string of Premier League clubs prepare to pounce for the Blackburn Rovers ace.

Rovers have continually stated their confidence that the 21-year-old winger would commit his long term future to the club imminently but, with his current deal expiring this summer, fears are growing he is set for an Ewood exit.

Venky’s and boss Steve Kean are desperate to secure their prized asset way beyond the summer but know the longer negotiations stall the bigger the danger of losing him for a lot less than his market value.

Hoilett has not completely rejected a new deal, with both parties still hopeful of reaching an agreement, although there are little signs at the moment of a compromise being reached.

Newcastle United are understood to be just one of a number of clubs who are tracking his situation with interest and, should contract talks failed to resolved, are likely to see if they can tempt Rovers into selling in January.

Rovers would have to weigh up the dangers of losing him for just compensation in the summer with losing their most attacking threat in January, although it is understood Venky’s are determined to hold on to his services.

A source close to Hoilett, said: “At the moment there are no new developments in his contract talk, i would say things are at a standstill.”

At the start of September boss Kean said he thought Hoilett’s new deal would be sealed within “24 hours”, before later in the month saying: “I believe the term has been agreed and his base salary has been agreed. It is the smaller detail which can be slow but the main things have been agreed.”

The Lancashire Telegraph understands there are a number of issues still to be resolved, including the size of a sell-on fee, as the Canadian starlet continues to impress on the field.

Hoilett has been at Rovers since the age of 13 but, due to visa issues, spent two seasons on loan in Germany.

A work permit appeal in 2009 allowed him to make his Rovers debut but for 18 months he struggled to realise his potential.

Kean’s appointment as Rovers boss in December 2010 finally saw the winger enjoy an extended first team run and he has quickly established himself as a firm fans favourite.

Saturday’s stunning opening goal in the 3-3 draw at Norwich was his second league goal of the campaign as his Premier reputation continues to rise.

Hoilett was withdrawn late on at Carrow Road on Saturday with a hamstring injury but is expected to be fit for Saturday’s visit of Chelsea.
