BLACKBURN Rovers are tonight waiting for the FA to confirm deals to sign Yakubu and Jordan Slew.

Rovers finalised a move for Everton striker Yakubu on deadline day and also made a late swoop for 18-year-old Sheffield United forward.

But the paperwork has gone right to the wire and Rovers are yet to announce either signing as they wait for confirmation from the FA that the deals were done in time, with the governing body currently busy ratifying a number of transfers across the country.

Everton turned down a bid of around £1.5m earlier in the week for 28-year-old Nigerian forward Yakubu, initially wanting closer to £3m for a man who cost them £11m when they signed him in 2007.

But the Toffees lowered their sights significantly after agreeing a deal to sign Argentinian forward Denis Stracqualursi.

Yakubu travelled to Blackburn today for a medical and to finalise his move, and said tonight: “I am looking forward to playing and helping the team, getting points and staying in the Premier League too.

“I’ve met Steve Kean already and he’s a great manager. Without him I don’t think I’d be here today.

“I have to give credit to the manager. He was the one that made me come to this place and for me to be here is really great.”

Rovers’ deadline day had late drama too as they made an evening bid for Slew, Sheffield United’s highly-rated 18-year-old forward, thought to be an initial payment of £1m with add-ons related to future progress.

Slew, who had been the subject of a £500,000 bid from Fulham in the summer only to sign a new two-year deal at Bramall Lane, has scored three goals in 14 senior appearances for the Blades and has also appeared for England under 19s.
