Hosts Settle won a low-scoring but enthralling Ribblesdale League T20 final to bring cheer to Marshfield in a tough season.

The Dalesmen, who were sent back to the foot of the table at the weekend after falling to defeat at the hands of Salesbury, have suffered a torrid time of things – but the cup win left them cheered and broke the hearts of holders Whalley. On an overcast day, Settle won the toss and inserted Whalley.

Controlled bowling assisted by some fine fielding and catching restricted Whalley to 87-7.

Kamran Younas top scored for Whalley with 24 but he was third out in the 12th over with the score on 42.

Only Lee Kearsley and Declan Fitzhenry with 13 runs each managed to reach double figures.

Settle began there reply in a very measured way, and opening bowlers David O’Neill with 2-9 and Younas with 1-7 ensured that Settle were behind the very modest required rate.

However Whalley’s lack of a regular fifth bowler, coupled with two untidy overs from Fitzhenry, enable Settle to get home with an over to spare.

Will Davidson, who is just 18, batted with a maturity that belied his age, making the winning hit and going to his own half century with an excellent cover drive.

He was awarded the man of the match trophy, and his elder brother and skipper Tom collected the winner’s trophy.
