While all the interest of late has focused on Burnley’s home-grown centre-forward, with interest from Southampton, Newcastle and just about anybody else with £6million to spare, his striking partner has been quietly and effectively going about his business.

And Charlie Austin is beginning to look very much at home.

The potential was never in doubt – 37 strikes in 58 starts for Swindon said so.

But his initial appearances in claret and blue suggested a player struggling to find his feet at the new level, not that a lengthy injury-induced spell on the sidelines helped.

That behind him, the number 23 has started this campaign in tremendous form, notching five times in six appearances. In addition to his match-winning brace at Pride Park, goals against Cardiff and Watford see him sitting atop the second tier’s goal-scorer’s chart.

There have, inevitably, been comparisons to Andy Payton, the Claret’s finest goal-poacher of recent years. And although such juxtaposition is premature, there are similarities in the style of the two players.

But while the relatively new boy was grabbing the headlines, there was a welcome return for the club’s longest-serving player.

Brian Jensen carries the admirable tag of being the great survivor. And the Dane turned in a performance equally as important as that of his team-mate at the other end of the pitch.

Encouraging though Saturday’s win was, reinforcements are still desperately needed to supplement an alarmingly thin and seemingly injury-prone squad.

At the time of writing, there were no new arrivals.

But one hopes that the manager will be able to produce at least a couple of rabbits from hats between now and tomorrow night.
