BRILLIANT Cherry Tree seconds lifted the Ribblesdale League’s Lawrenson Cup on Sunday as they dethroned cup holders Brinscall in an excellent final at Preston Old Road.

Craig Kennedy’s men triumphed in front of a big crowd on their home ground and claimed the trophy for the first time since 2008 when they also beat Brinscall in the final.

It sparked a Sunday night party for the club after a big innings from Sam Robbins set them up for their glory run.

Batting first Cherry lost opener Andrew Robinson leg before for nine with the score on 39 and it soon became 40-2 when Dan Logan was caught off the bowling of Ian Chaplin for 23.

Robbins and Anthony Robinson took the score on to 123 before the latter fell for 25 and after Craig Kennedy went for nine, Robbins finally perished for an excellent 71.

The son of Cherry Tree stalwart Nigel Robbins faced just 68 balls and struck eight fours and two sixes on his way to his crucial score.

The score was then 155-5 but Cherry slipped to 169 all out with only Jack Kennedy (12) making runs down the order as Chaplin finished with 4-34, while Ian Billington and Andrew Whittle each claimed two wickets.

As Brinscall replied in confident mood Dan Fish bowled Liam Winstanley for two and Phil Lowe and Cameron McVittie were both removed by Jaffer Mahmood, who found himself on a hat-trick.

And when Paul Chaplin was bowled by Mahmood for 34, Brinscall had slipped from 49-1 to 54-4 and were in trouble.

Simon Frost made a breezy 18 before falling to Rob Ince with the score on 96 but Sam Maclachlan and Thomas Donovan threatened to take Brinscall home with an excellent stand for the seventh wicket.

They got their side within 26 runs of Cherry Tree before Donovan was caught by Logan off James Cuff for 22 and two balls later Ian Billington was on his way back.

Brinscall’s hopes rested with Maclachlan – but he perished for 36 with the score on 147 and when Ian Chaplin was bowled by Cuff the party started.

Cuff finished with 3-15, while Mahmood, who starred with the bat making 69 for Cherry Tree’s first team after a late call-up on Saturday, returned 4-23 from seven overs.
