FOUR-goal Jay Rodriguez earned praise from manager Eddie Howe after firing Burnley into the Carling Cup second round with his first senior hat-trick.

The homegrown striker struck twice from the spot in 10 second half minutes and twice in open play after Burton Albion forced extra time at Turf Moor.

“Jay could have had about six or seven with a little bit more luck, but I thought he took his penalties well and took his goals really well after that,” said Howe.

“It’s great to see him on the scoresheet.

“A couple of times he got in one-on-one and he finished coolly.”

Strike partner Charlie Austin also got in on the act with his second goal in as many games.

“Charlie should have had three or four. He finished the hardest one of the lot, but it’s good to see him on the scoresheet again,” Howe added.

“He looked excellent in training on Monday (after his first goal).

“When you come to a new club you want to hit the ground running and that’s two in two so hopefully he can kick on from here.”
