HOLLY Lam-Moores might look to be all-but sure of her 2012 berth – but with the Olympics a year away she insists it’s the fear of missing the party that still drives her on.

Both the women’s and men’s handball teams were handed a spot at 2012 in January after satisfying the British Olympic Association that they could deliver a ‘credible performance’ in the capital next summer.

With Burnley-born Lam-Moores widely regarded as one of the shining lights in the British handball squad the 20-year-old could be forgiven for letting some 2012 daydreams creep into her daily schedule.

Despite seemingly having one foot in the Games door the current British squad of 18 will be shaved to 14 in the run up to the Olympics next year.

And with the nightmare of falling at the final hurdle haunting her, Lam-Moores has vowed not to take her foot off the gas at any point between now and the showpiece event kicking off on July 27, 2012.

“Missing out on selection is always in the back of my mind,” said Lam-Moores.

“But I am trying to put it out of there and just make sure I am working hard and training hard and being the best that I can be.

“The fact that I have been in the training squads for a few years now and that I have been picked to train down in London at Crystal Palace full-time are all positive things for me.

“But I need to make sure I keep concentrating on playing the best I can so that I stay in squads and that I can hopefully go to London 2012.”

If Lam-Moores is to make it to 2012 it will be the culmination of a host of sacrifices. Most recently she has had to up sticks and train full-time in Crystal Palace, entirely unfunded. Summer trips to Europe to pit her and her teammates against the best club sides in and around the continent are funded but her day-to-day living has to come out of her own pocket.

But while the financial burden of 2012 is a constant worry Lam-Moores insists she wouldn’t have it any other way after admitting she has been hit by London Olympic fever ever since her move down south.

“Since I moved down to London in May I have really noticed the difference in the team,” added Lam-Moores.

“It has really come alive in the last couple of months. The fact that I am playing and surrounded by the British team at all times makes sure you think about London all the time.

“It’s everywhere, especially being down in London, there is so much more media stuff for us to do.”
